Is a box a safe where players can store large chips?
And is a player bank (account) just like a normal bank account where the transactions are reported to the IRS ?

At Foxwoods they run their boxes like a bank safety deposit box. You get a key, they have a key and it takes both keys to open the box. Presumably you have the only copy of the customer keys because they will drill out the box if you don't use it more than once a month (after attempts to contact you fail). You have to pay $50 deposit which is refunded when you decide to stop using it. You can lock the door when accessing your box and watch the Foxwoods employee pull out the box and put it back.

So yes the box is safe.

I don't know anything about player accounts.

I don't think they report the transactions, they are not a federally mandated institution and not FDIC insured etc etc.

the boxes are safe deposit box's just inside the casino really. They are a good place to store chips if you are an everyday/regular player. You can avoid the cage lines and just toss your chips in there for the next time you come back.

Think how convenient it would be to be able to walk in, grab your rack and go to work

The box will be safe & secure. IIRC, you're now in Cali and when I used to go to the Bike, Commerce and HP boxes weren't available and I had a player bank at each casino. Although I'm not sure, I don't think they report to the IRS but, reading between the lines, their records will be available to the IRS if they ever become 'interested' in you. Paper trail, and all of that so bear that in mind if you use it. OTOH, it's much safer than walking around w/ a lot of cash when there are ppl looking to see who's cashing out for large amounts.
