(L/C?) \"If you have to ask, you won\'t be able to understand.\"

WTF? I imagine most people only hear this once or twice in their life, but I seem to get it a lot.

For example, today I asked my brother why Tarantino has Mr. Orange confess he's a cop to Mr. White at the end of Reservoir Dogs. He replied as in the title.

Am I just an easy target for condescension? Or is this an acceptable answer to lots of questions?

And yes, I know, if I have to ask this...I won't be able to understand the answer anyways...

For things like the question in the OP, maybe. I 'know' why Roth tells Keitel, because during the experience of watching I began to understand the honor between these men, but it's difficult to explain in words and it's even more difficult to learn it later if you didn't get the feeling at the time.

It's a cheap way of getting out of explaining something that might be hard to verbalize.

I imagine Tarentino had him confess partly to up the drama and "mess" of the situation. It also released the emotional tension generated by the fact that Mr. White was sticking up for Mr. Orange so vehemently when he was in fact a cop. Mr. Orange felt guilty about this and wanted to get it off his chest. That's the way I saw it.

Re. 'If you have to ask, you'll never know.'

I have heard this many, many times. But then I am a Chilli's fan.

If you don't understand it really doesn't matter. If you do understand it matters even less.
