Opening Your 3 Betting Range?

Okay, I realize that this is less important at the stakes I currently play (think the smallest stakes possible-then go 1 level lower). I was reading over Aba's well post and he talked about how opening his 3 betting range helped him.

I understand how this would help ones play, as it would be much harder for your opponent to put you on a hand if you 3 bet 78s every once in a while.

My questions:

What is the typical three bet situation?

Wouldn't you want to do this with hands that aren't easily dominated by the initial raiser?

Could we post some hands where this has been done effectively? (I would but this is not in my bag o' tricks yet)

Do you have a link to aba's post about the subject?

I wouldn't unless they are weak/tight and even then, only rarely. This is useful for metagame, which is not useful at lower stakes.

You don't necessarily want a 3bet to define your hand as AA/KK/QQ/AK, but unless you play with the same people, AND those people are smart/observant, opening up your 3bet range can cause you a lot of trouble against most players.

I generally just keep it to JJ+, AK only if in position. I think position is a huge part of 3-bets, and I really hate to 3-bet in the SB with TT, or AK. Sure its kinda passive, but I think at this level, its the best strategy. This is all for opp. I have no info on. A regular I might switch it up a little bit, but that isnt really the point.

I believe it was either in his "well" post or his "my story" post- my story

For the "well" just search SSNL - Aba20 user/ well subject, and I think youll find it.

I was reading another of his post at the time, but cant seem to find that one.

Read the "my story" post anyway, its great!

I assume we're talking specifically about re-raising PF. I can't wait for Monday's lesson then. For now, here's an example of a move I tried recently as an experiment...

Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $0.10/$0.25
9 players
Converter

Stack sizes:
Hero: $25
UTG+1: $21.45
MP1: $25.60
MP2: $22.20
MP3: $12.05
CO: $42.60
Button: $32.35
SB: $18.30
BB: $22.60

Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is UTG with 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
Hero calls, 3 folds, MP3 calls, CO calls, Button folds, SB calls, BB raises to $1.5, Hero raises to $5.25, 4 folds.
Uncalled bets: $3.75 returned to Hero.

Results:
Final pot: $3.75

I can represent Aces b/c I'm UTG. Of course, if he calls, I have a problem on the flop. I guess I'd cbet ONCE if checked to, hoping he only called for set value. But I wouldn't like it. Still, assuming I only make this PF play once in a while, I think it's a nice move.
