Can someone please explain what "chip washing" is and why it helped this sports betting ring?

Is it just converting "illegal income" into poker winnings by cashing the chips?

It essentially shows how you get income. If you win 10k in a casino the gov't doesn't have a clue as to what you started with. So, Drug Dealer walks into the casino with 10k in drug money, plays a few hours, cashes out for 9k, the gov't. can no longer come after that 9k in a drug related case (unless they have surveillance video of you continuously "washing" chips, then they will charge you with money laundering along with drug dealing).

Chip washing goes on at lots of casinos but not at the Taj Mahal.

Haha, that's a good one but as of a couple of days ago, all the Taj tournament chips had finally been washed. New felt on the tables too. I was shocked.

I once asked the floor at the Bike if they washed the chips. He said no, but they wash the cards. Hooray, plastic!

Is it because of the micro-chips inside of them?
