Getting crushed on stars lately..what point do you call it quits?

I lost about 3.5 buy ins today at 100nl and it just drives me crazy with the beats I'm taking. I have a hard time quiting and continue playing trying to get back to some reasonable loss # on the day with no success. I definitely couldn't of won today no matter how good I played, it was just one of those "doomswitch" days.

So...any tips on when to hang it up for the day? Maybe I should just quit when the beats start coming and I feel a doomswitch day coming on...

I honestly dont quit if I still feal that I am playing well. If the bad beats bother you just take a breather and relax then come back to playing, and remember that if you had the same situation (as the bad beat) and played it again, knowing what you both held, you would do the same play and win more then not.

Bad beats are just part the game, learn to take it as an "I had you mother [censored]" and everything turns golden.

Quit when it starts to tilt you. It doesn't matter what happened as long as you don't let it affect you psychologically.

you know when you should quit...its a matter of being honest with yourself and calling it a day...the game is going to be there tommorrow or later (for now) so why not just wait a little while and come back when you are feeling confident about going back to the table. There is no way it didnt tilt you even a little because you made this post...

When you start calling or raising with hands to catch up from your losses before quit

if you start floating more often after losing a few buy ins...quit

I only have one little thing of advice that works for me, dont get excited about winning a big pot because then you will have the adverse affect when you lose a big pot...if it is business as usual its less difficult to let the beats effect you.

Exactly. Quit when it effects your play. Variance will make you lose initially, but if you feel that your tilt is giving chips away to then call it a day. Get some Jamba Juice.

Being honest to your self at a moment 1 beats hits after another 1, is hard or almost impossible. Best thing to do is stop, have something to eat, drink something, watch some tellie. Do anything that has absolutely nothing to do with poker. after about half an hour, ask urself if you want to continue playing. if you have the slightest doubt, dont play. If you feel like ur up to it, join some new tables, maybe even a limit lower if the beats were realy hard. New tables because u dont want to play against those guys that beat u or sucked out on u. start playing like u just started without losses and try to play ur A game.

most important thing, be honest to urself, were it realy bad beats and suckouts or did you make mistakes?

Wise words. Mistakes are profitable if you learn from them.

Also, don't forget that you can go on tilt after winning a big pot much the same as you can if you lose a big pot. This is especially true if you make a good read on someone at your table and get it all in by the river with a marginal hand for the board and win. Now your adrenaline is flowing and you can easily "tilt off" what you have just won.

Some good advice in this thread.

Are you properly rolled to play these games?

I am not just meaning the standard 20 buyins. Everyone has different "comfort" levels, for some of us 20 is plenty and are not effected by a small downswing of a few buyins. For others, like myself, we need 40-50 buyins to not let these downswings effect us.

As you guys know, this game can be very taxing mentally at times and yesterday was certainly one of those days. I really like the advice about being honest with yourself b/c that’s what it really comes down to. Knowing when you're tilted, or not playing optimally is a huge aspect of poker to consider and not something that I follow when I’m chasing losses. It’s like I turn into a different person and whatever edge I had over these players becomes nil, but I keep playing and then it turns into “emotional poker”. I start to rationalize plays I’m making by saying to myself ”this guy sucked out on me so I’m going call his raises with any two and get him” and other similar nonsense that puts me on a one-way street to nowhere…

I know you guys go through this type of stuff to so thanks for the advice/comments.

*grunch*

umm 3.5 buyins? are you properly rolled. i play 6 max mainly but ive had 2 ten-buyin down-sings this month in 50k hands. get used to the variance and learn to care less about money when playing or move down.

Re: Getting crushed on stars lately..what point do you call it quits?

If you start to call raises with ATC just to get back at people that sucked out on you, you're on serious tilt. Don't change tables, just quit, take a break and save yourself the money.
