Meaning of \'gay\'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5049566.stm

So, according to the BBC, it means 'lame' or 'rubbish', and doesn't convey homophobia.

I think it does, personally.

Having said that, 'gay' was subverted from 'carefree/happy' to 'homosexual'... well, it's appropriate it should evolve to mean something else...

Its how it is used in context.

If I am upset/mad and say "this is gay" then I am saying something is irritating me and it sucks.

If I say "he is gay" then I am referring to a man who is indeed a homosexual.

Well said. Today's society has a fascination for changing the meanings of words.

But the use of the word "gay" to mean "lame" or "rubbish" was widespread among young people, it said.

Just because this is the case does not mean that it is right.

"This is gay" means something is lame.

"This is really f'ing gay" means something is actually homosexual.

whatever the BBC says, it is a derogatory term derived from homosexual, although i agree that was subverted originally also.

Interestingly, my friends used to say if something was good they "bummed it", or "it was bum". I asked why one day and my friend said 'you wouldn't bum someone unless you liked them'. So hows about that.

Although I don't find people saying "that's gay" or "you're gay" offensive, it does make you sound like an F'ing moron though if you're over the age of 19 and you still use "gay" in a derogatory sense.

I don't think it is derogatory at all. I say "Yeah, I'm gay." or "I think he is gay." But I have used it in the derogatory sense as well saying "That is so damn gay!" or refering to super-sissy-drama-enriched-twinkies-queers, "If I ever act that [censored] gay, please slap me in the face with the King James Bible and bring me back to my senses"

But I also have been know to use the term "Breeders" to refer to heteros and in a derogatory manner.

As in "God I wish that woman would shut that kid the hell up. [censored] breeders!" or "That guy is cute but check out the ring, he is a breeder."

So I guess it is only fair that we have words for heterosexuals as well.
