Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

Any 2+2ers planning on playing any events? I'm looking for info from anybody who has played it before. Where to stay/ Turnout for the prelims/ any advice would be appreciated.

This is the first year. Im guessing there will be around 200 or so people in the main event, but I might get suprised. I'll be playing the main event but not the smaller ones.

It looks like everything has been re-done since Katrina. I'm hoping for more than 200 in the prelims.

I believe this the first year for this event. I plan on playing in the first satillite event friday, July 20.
I will likely play in one preliminary event and hopefully the ME

I was told by a super hotel snob who goes to Biloxi a lot to visit family that the Beau Rivage (site of the tourney) is a very nice place to stay, and the only one there falling into that category. I'm undecided about playing the main event.

It doesn't make much sense for someone in my spot (playing $550 prelims) to stay there with the weekend rates tho. Close to $300 on Saturday and Sundays. Anybody stayed at Palace?

this is a first time tournament for the WPT; The casino there is supposed to be nice; similar to Bellagio.

u fkn rock my friend.
what a great year for you!
The GCC should have a great turn out considering how successful other southern Tourney stops are year after year (Tunica). At any rate, hope to see you there.

I seem to remember seeing a special rate for the event. Though I can not find it right now, I will keep looking and post as soon as I locate it.

At the bottom of the tourn. schedule sheet it has a number to call for reservations. 1-228-386-7254 and ask for Donna. The rate I got was $70 a night for Sun. thru Thurs. and either $90 or $95 a night for Fri. and Sat., I can't remember which. Hope this helps you guys.

Wow. I'll have to call and check it out. From $300/night to $100 would be fantastic.

The Beau Rivage is very nice. The Poker staff are Super Nice. Players are terrible. They actually play Omaha High, very fun.

Hey Guys,
I will be TD of this event. I hope to see many of you there. we expect 500-800 player fields for the prelims, and around 300+ for the main event ( depending on participation in the WSOP Europe event.) You should come and check it out, as the Beau Rivage is one of the best properties I have ever seen. The tournament will be run the same way they always are when I'm there, so if you know me, you know what you get.

I hope to see you there,
Johnny Grooms

Thanks Johnny.
Looking forward to it. Living in the Fla panhandle now so may try to make it to a couple of the prelims.

Regarding the special room-rate for tournament players booked through Donna:
Is there some sort of play-requirement that gets tracked? I might only play cash-games or just a couple of the second chance tourneys or something and was wondering if this effects me getting what appears to be a really good rate at the Beau.

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

Aren't the structures for most WPT prelim events pretty consistently the same?

40 minute levels with shortish stacks or 60 minute levels with shortish stacks.
Is this really going to effect your decision on whether or not to attend?

I can safely say it doesn't really make a difference to me.
If I have the time to make it then I'll make it.
And whatever tourney/s I feel I can afford to play at the time I'll give it a shot. Fast structure...meh. No biggie.

ForRealDD 07-16-2007 09:47 PM

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

It won't affect my decision. I would just like to know/see the structure before I play. Is there something wrong with simply asking to see it ?

TYPICAL STEPFORD POKER PLAYER;WILL PLAY REGARDLESS OF STRUCTURE OR ANY OTHER ASPECT THAT MAY AFFECT THE TOURNEY (JUICE RAKE ETC) NO WONDER NOTHING EVER GETS BETTER.

If it's a horrible structure (which I don't think it will be), then maybe. I'm almost definitely going, just need to book the room, I was just more or less curious as to what it will be.

I booked my room a few months ago for this and Donna said for the tournament they were not worrying about play requirements. However normally to get the poker room rate i think you need 5 hours of cash play per day.

Also i haven't seen anything on tournament structures. Was there a week and a half ago and they didn't have anything in the poker room on the tourney structures at that time. They had the schedule of tournaments just like the PDF on the BR website.

Oh....and i will be there for all preliminary events....unless the structure stinks then i'll play a couple of them and work the cash games instead.

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

I had no idea this was happening...but I got lucky in that I had already booked a Labor Day weekend there. I'm staying at Palace which was cheaper than even the motels near the 'casino' end of Beach Road (or whatever it's called). I wanted to stay at BR but it was too much $$ but I'll have to reconsider if I can get a good rate. I'll probably play Event #3. Hope to see/meet some 2+2ers out there.

I'll probably play at least a couple of the satellites provided things go even marginally well at the casinos around here in the ensuing months.

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

I just booked for Labor Day weekend and I still got:
Fri $90
Sat $90
Sun $70

That's quite a discount...IIRC the regular rate was $299 each night.

And Donna was as nice as could be and has the cutest southern accent (I'm a sucker for girls with a southern accent).

September is filled with action/choices, but I must say that I'm almost more inclined to go to Biloxi, MS (somewhere I have little interest in visiting) and play an event that you're running at an MGM property than fly out to London (a city I'm DYING to visit) and play what could be a total mess of a tournament (WSOP Europe).

Just got my room booked with Donna(very cute southern accent indeed!). Rates are insanely low for players. She did comfirm it's $70 Sunday - Thursday and $90 Friday and Saturday.

weeee !

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

I'll be there.
Most likely I'll be there from Sunday the 2nd (I might wait until Wednesday to go because the prelim events suck) until I bust out of the ME (this will be my first 10K buyin).

As mentioned earlier, I am a little agitated that the prelim events are all $300 and $500. I wish they had a $2500 or $1500 prelim event or at least a $1000 one.

As others have said, the Beau is a clone of the Bellagio. The rooms are exactly the same. It is by far the nicest place in Biloxi and the only one I would consider staying at.

jackets77 07-18-2007 01:52 PM

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

southga...just wondering why you say the prelim events suck? Is that because of the lower buy ins? or is it the structure, etc.? I'm thinking about going only for the preliminary events as the events for the main event conflict with some other plans I have already made.

Another question I have is this. I'm reading the fine print at the bottom of the schedule of events, and it states that $10,000 will be witheld from each event except the main event, and that the winner of each event prior to the main event will get a seat in the main event. Wouldn't that be the purpose of the satellites? Why would you withold $10K from each each event? Also, if you do happen to win first, could you just take the $10K entry money for the main event, or would you have to play in the main event?

ForRealDD 07-18-2007 02:20 PM

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

It states that those seats are transferable. So no you wouldn't have to play the seat.

southgapoker 07-18-2007 02:28 PM

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

They should have at least one non main event with a bigger buyin. A $1500 + $70 would be great.

Has anyone seen the strucutres for any of these events?

ForRealDD 07-18-2007 02:31 PM

Re: Gulf Coast Poker Championship (WPT)

Not yet. I was kinda hoping Johnny would come back by with a little more info.
