Checking it down headsup in potential JP situation.
 

These guys know each other, but I think their relationship is strictly poker related. They go to the flop with about 5 players. Flop is AAx. Player A is UTG and leads out. It folds to Player B on the button. He asks the dealer if they can talk about the jackpot. Dealer says no, but obviously A now realizes that a JP is possible if his hand can make it. They agree to check it down and do. A shows AJ for trips, B show TT.

A couple of players got irritated at first, but when they realized that B can't really call anything (JP was pretty small.) they calmed down and were fine with it.

Any thoughts on this?

Some places have a minimum number of bets in the pot for the jackpot to be awarded.

I see no problem with the situation as OP describes it. One more ace on the board probably triggers the jackpot.

Player B asked an innocuous question, and got two free cards for it? Good move on his part.

Unless this is a room whose jackpot (1) allows one-legged hands to play, and (b) counts AAATT as a qualifying hand, it appears that the BBJ isn't even possible. Yet Player A is willing to check down his monster? I want to play at his table.

In smaller games the standard phrase where I played was "pocket pair bets" and the pocket pair will throw out 1 bet on the flop and check the turn if they get a call. In a NL game they would often throw out a min/$5 bet and then check. In most games with jackpot mentality retards people would be upset if a person did bet on an AAXX board because it might ruin their precious jackpot.

At least in most Los Angeles area casinos, an ace on the turn or river and the 5th card jack or lower would trigger the jackpot...aces full of tens beaten by quads. Since the pp is not that likely to stack off, depending on the size its not a bad strategy to check down out here. In addition the only advantage to fixed drops in LA is that the jackpot dollar is already dropped on the flop, hence no minimum pot is needed for the jackpot to trigger.

Was playing at Red Rock recently and a guy sits down and recognizes that i'm not one who frequents the joint (unlike the other 8 players at the table) and asks me If I chop.
I told him I do... he said, OK, just remember if you are in a chopping situation and you have a hand that could hit the jackpot to eithor call the BB or check it down just in case....

I'd rather play at a room that has a "chop once, chop always " rule....
