I might be making my first trip to Toronto to catch the Cs game up there. What's the arena like? I'm hoping me and my buddy pull the roadtrip off.

No offense but have you ever seen Marion play? The reasons he is awesome has virtually nothing to do with Nash, aside from a couple of ally-oops/game.

TSC,

AK isn't very good. Aside from the difference in numbers you can just watch the two and realize that they aren't on the same planet...one is super explosive in every part of his game and the other is, well--not.

lol, tuq is the man.

about marion: Wow, marion for AK would be so hot. (As a jazz fan) Basically they're both (when at the top of their games) very good defensive SFs who can score inside... and marion can score outside too. AK is pretty much a poor man's shawn marion.

[/ QUOTE ]

AK is a much better passer and shot blocker imo, although I'm not looking at any stats when I say that. Marion, as you said, is a better shooter, and I also think hes more explosive around the rim.

This is correct. BTW Diaw/Marion have some pretty regular hookups.

Nash definitely gives Marion some sweet feeds as he does everyone else, but most of Marion's scoring comes from 1) goofy-looking perimeter shots, which aren't set up by Nash any more than anyone else on the team, 2) one-on-one drives to the hoop, and 3) cleaning up off the glass. None of those require MVSteve to be effective. It's Stoudemire that IMO works with Nash and relies on him much heavier to get his 26 PPG.

While players have a history of leaving teams with a great PG only to flounder with their new team - Jason Kidd and Magic Johnson made a lot of free agents a lot of money elsewhere - I doubt that's the case with Marion. That said, I don't think he's remotely worth the $20M he seems to be asking for, unless the market makes an unlikely surge in the next year.

Completely agree, and he cleans the glass better than anyone on the team.

tuq,

Is Marion a role player right now b/c of the team he is on? Would he be a premiere player on most other teams? B/c I think he would.

kidcolin 09-27-2007 01:18 PM

Re: The Official NBA Regular Season 07-08 Thread

If Marion is your go-to-guy your team is probably in trouble. He'd still be really good and probably load up the stat sheet, but I think he'd be much less efficient and the team would be a stinker.

And there's the rub, the only teams he can go to and be the top dawg are bad teams. If he goes to UTAH in an AK swap, he'll probably get a bit more attention, but they're still just going to pick and roll Deron and Boozer all day. He'd go straight back to whining.

If he really wanted to be top dawg on a team that could surprise some teams, he should push to go the Bobcats, Griz, or the Hornets.

I honestly have no clue. I'm inclined to say no, actually. He's generally been surrounded by talent like Starbury, Nash, Stoudemire, et al, so there's no precedent for how he's performed. Drop him on a crappy team and I have no idea how that would turn out.

Anyway, the most obvious statistic supporting the "Nash doesn't make him better" argument is that his statistics have been virtually the same his whole career, whether the team was good or bad, whether Nashty was around or not. He admirably filled the hole with higher scoring and rebounding the year that Stoudemire was out, other than that he's been eerily consistent.

He'd play 2nd fiddle to Gerald on the 'cats, Pau on the Griz, and Paul on the Hornets.

Fact is he's a fringe all star and does some things that are NOT easy to find (unlike a pure shooter, he defends great + other stuff) so has alot of value. But, he's not Nash or Amare...

tdarko, tuq,

I'm not hating on him. He's awesome. He's just not a great first option on the offensive end. I doubt he's boned my girlfriend, cuz she hasn't existed for a good 6 years now.

Bobbo,

Disagree with the Gerald/Paul thing. Neither one of them are stars on the Nash/Amare level, nor are their games very star-centric. He'd share the spotlight, sure, but he'd have a pretty even standing with them, unlike his current 3rd man on the totem poll situation.

(but wanted to) the tickets are 200$/game, just PM me. game is november 2nd 8est and on espn.

Re: The Official NBA Regular Season 07-08 Thread

I don't know if we really have an adequate control group to say that Nash doesn't make Marion better, since before Nash, his primary PG was...Jason Kidd...

I agree with KC that Marion is bad news as your first option because he really can't create his own shot because he can't really dribble or shoot effectively on the move (this is where his funky release hurts him more - he has really bad balance when shooting J's off the dribble, probably because his fundamentals are so off). Basically he'd have all the problems KG has as a first option and then some...

I definitely think that if Marion was the star player on another team that he would struggle. He should stick to playing great defense, rebounding, catching alley-oops.

I gave him that title. I don't approve of his Loc: though. Anyway, you make a compelling argument, SI Jinx and all that.

The problem with being a Suns fan is how goddamned close they get. Oh I just realized this is a bit of a repeat from earlier this year, but man it's tough. Coyotes? Cardinals? There are a couple of crappy franchises that no Phoenician should emotionally invest themselves in. But the Suns...they have a really compelling argument that in 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2005, and 2007 they had the talent to win it all but came up empty each year, sometimes in excruciating fashion.

(I barely and deliberately left 2006 off...I'm just torn about whether they could have beaten Dallas even with Raja Bell, I think they overacheived and luckboxed their way to the WCF that year, honestly.)

It's tough. It's also tough to imagine a Mavericks fan feeling an ounce of sympathy because their team has never won a title either, but they've largely sucked save for pockets of brilliance around 1987 and much of this decade. It's way less painful to pull for a sucky team since the letdown is negligible.

It is tough for a Mav fan b/c of how good their teams have been compared to how God-awful they were. An NBA final appearance in which they were minutes away from putting the lockdown on a championship only 7 years removed from being the worst team in the NBA and 13 years from again being the worst team in the NBA--they went from possibly the worst organization in all of sports to everything class. Still nothing to show for it though so I understand but the difference is we experienced a great run w/ the Cowboys in the early-mid nineties as well as the Stars in the late 90's (title in 99--lost in the finals in 00).

When the Mavs blew it this last post season I was really bummed and it sucked but I was at least optimistic about the Cowboys in a few months.

Ya, I thought it was funny. But, while we're on that note, can we get artdogg and the other Phoenix homers to stop whining about it now that we're coming into a new season? After the BS reffing in the Finals of 06, I buried my head for a little while, and stopped posting NBA stuff. What I didn't do was troll every NBA thread with "we wuz robbed" posts. It's really annoying to read.

P.S. This is not directed at tuq.

tuq 09-27-2007 11:58 PM

Re: The Official NBA Regular Season 07-08 Thread

tdarko,

Yeah. I'd go so far as to say that Dallas in the Finals in '06 with the sweep all but inevitable to losing in six is clearly worse than even the Suns in 1993 because they were behind in that series and were only starting to make it interesting when Danny Ainge decided to double down on Horace Grant, leaving Paxson open for the three. They spent that entire series in the hole, whereas Dallas seemed like a mortal lock from the first game. Christ, I still can't believe they lost that series, they were SO MUCH BETTER than the Heat. Argh, hurts my head.

ClassicBob,

The reason I don't carry on about it is that nobody wants to hear it. Artdogg cracks me up though. It's like the Donaghy thing: he was almost certainly manipulating the over/under in that game three, but that works for both sides, right? So while Bill Simmons writes that it was the "worst officiated game he's ever seen" or whatever it's not really fair to say it cost the Suns the game. And I generally agreed with the Spurs homers that Nashty's nose injury in game one didn't definitively cost them the game (it didn't help though). The only thing that really annoys me here is people saying that the Spurs were "clearly" the better team. Nothing was made clear in that series.

I do take huge exception to those suspensions though, but from memory so did basically every non-Spurs-homer from that thread, except for Clarkmeister as he was being his usual nitty self. Bottom line, nobody cares so I'm not gonna annoy them about it.

This post is long but I'll make it clear: if the Suns are to be denied again on their quest for a title, the team I want to win is Dallas.
