***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Thought we had one of these already, but when I searched it looked like it was just the offseason thread. Really pumped they get to cap off the first week of the season. The offense is primed for improvements and I think the defense will take a big step forward, but don't think they will be as good as some people are expecting.

Goal #1: Don't get swept by the Cardinals!!

I guess winning the division would be pretty cool too

Goal #1 is definitely a good place to start, lol. I'm with you on holding back expectations a little bit compared to some of the hype, the phrase "cautious optimism" comes to mind. Here's hoping, though, my biggest concern is whether the defense can tackle well enough, but the offense ought to be fun to watch, especially if Gore is in good shape.

GO NINERS!!!

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

I'll take it. This team still has a long way to go to competing but it's in the right direction. Some can be blamed for the lack of the O playing at all together in the pre-season. D looked really good, hopefully O will come around. Very happy with 2ndary. Just need to stop the run better. Too many holes. Willis was awesome, as expected.

Willis is a [censored] beast. Offense still has a long way to go...

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Agreed. The offense was horrific. Didn't look like the Oline really got going, and Smith's terrible game was moving anyone out of the box. Seemed like Jackson dropped a lot of balls, but coming in Seahawks fans said that was to be expected. Battle had a great game all things considered. VD was basically nonexistent, didn't really see if it was the coverage or whatever. Don't really need to comment on Smith's performance, but I do think he should run more. There were plenty of times earlier in the game where he was pressured and hung around too long.

Pretty happy with how the D played. Leinart certainly helped them out, but when he did complete a ball the secondary was usually there with a quick tackle, which I thought was a concern with Arizona's WR. Clements and Harris were great in particular. I didn't really notice Lewis's play, but as long as he's not getting burnt deep I'm pretty happy. I saw that way too often watching Philly games in the past. Willis is a stud and Bryant Young had a pretty good game for a 60 year old

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

3 Observations from Game 1:

1)The offense was HORRIBLE, particularly the O-Line. Smith had no time, Gore had no chance.

2)The Niner secondary literally could not have performed better. They completely shut down one of the best WR pairs in football. (Willis was also quite studly)

3)I think all Niner fans should write a thank you letter to the the Cardinals coaches, for not teaching their players how to stand still before a play (not to mention the other bonehead penalties). We probably would have lost if they had kept the penalties to a minimum.

I didn't think we played particularly well, but a win's a win. Next week: @ the Rams w/o Orlando Pace!

don't ask me why I picked the Niners the first week of my survival pick'em pool, but good god, I was happy last night when they came back

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

There's a reason why the Seahawks let D.Jac go in the same division - Seattle used to be Drop City and he was a huge part of that. Hopefully the 9'ers offense is going to get better, but the passing game doesn't look good. They're primed for nothing but short passes to Gore and Davis, which is too one dimensional.

Spellmen 09-11-2007 01:25 PM

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

I don't disagree, but you can't really argue that DJax doesn't improve their WR corps. It's a sad reality, but DJax is 1000x better as a #1 receiver than Antonio Bryant

Battle is a great hands/possession type guy, so I'll be pretty happy as long as DJax stretches the field occasionally and VD actually shows up.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Jackson had a decent game last night. He dropped one in the end zone, but that would have been a REALLY good catch, so I can't complain...yet.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

I don't see why it would have been a particularly good catch. It hit him in stride, right in the hands.

I thought the 49ers offensive line sucked. The Cardinals' coaching staff lost that game.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

The offense looked terrible, but the defense looked really good. Since defense is what I was worried about initially it's hard not to be somewhat happy about the results. I'll cling to the belief that the offense (which I expected big things from) just had an off day, and will look better down the road. We'll see if this theory holds up over time...

Because he was wearing a cornerback like a blanket.

(Not suggesting it was pass interference, just good coverage)

They play at Pitt next game, we'll see how they do there. I'd say they will be at least an 8 point underdog.

Spellmen 09-17-2007 02:02 AM

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Offense still looked shaky. Gore got half his yards on a 4th and 1 43 yard romp for the lead. Didn't get to watch most of it since I was trying to stream, so I'm still not sure how much of it is Frank and how much is the Oline, hopefully someone who watched it can comment

Still not happy with the D. Last week Edge ran wild and the receivers got blanketed, this week they hold SJax to 60 and Bulger goes off for 300.

Either way, an ugly win is still a win. Pitt next week will be big and Gore and the Oline will actually have to show up big, because I expect Pitt to give Smith a lot of trouble.

Also, VD needs to get in the game

Lastly, game ball goes to this guy
http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/27/270622.jpg
Huge sack in the 4th to stall what looked to be a FG drive

BobJoeJim 09-17-2007 02:07 AM

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

The only thing good about the defense was that they managed to be lights out in the red zone, holding St. Louis to a lot of FG attempts which is how the Niners stayed in the game. There's definitely a lot of room for improvement on both sides of the ball, but sneaking out wins after getting outplayed is better than losing

That was luck/variance not skill. If the coin flipped another way it could've easily been Rams 31 - SF 10

Fortunately we still have a lot of room for improvement.

I think that's a little harsh. Give the D a little credit for stepping it up in the red zone.

With that being said, we really should be 0-2.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

A good red zone defense is somewhat sustainable, which means there is some skill behind it. But a good red zone performance in one game is basically luck/variance.

It should also be noted that the Rams have had significant red zone problems since last year.

Bump: I thought it was pretty awful a couple of years ago when the PK was the MVP, but at least his work directly results in points. Who knew it could get worse? Yet, now, the P is the MVP, so here's to you, Buddy Lee...see you in Honolulu!

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Atleast we have a couple of players to work with. The problem is one of them isn't our QB.

P. Willis-Straight up stud.
Clements-Stud.
Davis-Young, erattic but talent to be a stud.
Lee-Stud.
Gore-Irratic this year but if o-line decides to come around could be a stud.
Lawson-When healthy was pretty solid.
Staley-Playing pretty well.

Others of note:

M. Lewis-Was bad last year in Philly, but has been solid for our D.

Players that are killing us:

Larry Allen-Alright i guess last night but has been bad this year.
Jennings-Guy has to go, please do it quickly.
Harris-Getting old. Was great last year, but that was last year.
Young-Been solid but getting old. Please retire.
Rest of d-line. Pathetic.
D. Smith-Leave the team.
Moore-You need MOOORE minutes.
Smith-Either step up or we will replace you. Get your shoulder healthy.
Rest of O-line-Please start playing together and stop sucking.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

hostler is/was the biggest problem with the offense. you think its a coincidence that they brought in tollner and five days later they had their best offensive game to date by a huge margin?

also harris was awesome yesterday against the cards while clements was getting torched

capone0 11-26-2007 03:50 PM

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

Hostler needs to go. Hopefully they keep Tollner. I think it was their most points put up in 4 years and that was with a backup QB and a shotty O-line and set of WRs.

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

It's good to see you guys keeping your chins up. At least you have the possibility of a bright future. The Cardinals will be a hopeless joke until the Bidwill's sell them, which from what I understand will never happen as the team is their sole enterprise and source of income and they love, love revenue sharing which lines their pockets without having to put it back into payroll.

Topic: the 1991 49ers were perhaps the only example in sports that I can think of where one of the best teams in the league missed the playoffs. I mean the Redskins owned super hard that year but the Niners won their last six games of the regular season including absolutely pounding the Bears in the finale, but lost on a tiebreaker. It's the one time I wished there were more teams let into the playoffs. I think part of the culprit was an injury to Steve Young but don't remember the details.

Phildo 11-26-2007 03:52 PM

Re: ***Official 2007 49ers Thread***

i think the o-line will be fine if they replace larry allen and fire that piece of [censored] george warhop (also hostler ldo). i think coaching is more to blame for the mess at o-line than anything else

Bass, Snyder, Staley, Heitmann, Rookie/Vet should be good for next year. Let Smiley, Harris, Jennings, Allen go in the off-season.

I still would like more talented WRs. Jackson blows donkey balls. Give Hill a shot or try to trade for a legit #1.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Jennings would make a fine RT with Staley switching to LT (at least I assume that's what they plan to do with him) but he can't stay healthy. Harris is obviously overpaid garbage. Smiley has been a joke this season and is going to demand a huge contract that he has no chance of landing because of his piss poor play. Good job completely [censored] up your free agent year, buddy. Supposedly they want to put Snyder at guard but I dunno how well that will work out. I would think he's too tall to play on the interior and he gets no push in run blocking. We'll see.
