What\'s the deal with the titles?
 

I am over 2500 posts, but my title did not automatically switch to the title after Poo-Bah (I think it's carpal/tunnel). I really don't care what my title is (as long as it isn't a *), but I am curious as to why it wouldn't have switched.

This might be because a mod at one time changed your title and then changed it back to the default. The system recognizes this as a custom title. I'll set it correctly.

Another guess might be that your Pooh Bah didn't have a hyphen like the default Pooh-Bah. Its possible that the system can recognize the title as default if the mod spells it correctly. I think this is more likely, but I'm guessing.

Who do you think should receive Titles? Why should they? What makes a good Title? Should anyone have a custom Title?

Custom title should definitely be given on merit and not on demand.
What makes it desirable is not anyone can have it.

I think the custom title being "earned", for better or worse, is a good way of handling it. Letting users choose their own title definitely makes them meaningless.

I'm just disappointed to see Grunch has beaten me to the title I wouldn't have minded having one day. "Bounty Hunter" seems quite appropriate given my 2+2 name, and seeing how much time I spend in the IG/IB/AR forums. Ah well, I'm sure one day I'll accidentally do something noteworthy enough to end up with a title. Hopefully it's something positive, but that might be hoping for too much. I know on sitepoint they let you create your own title and they run vBulletin but I'm not sure if that's a custom mod or not. Guess we'll find out after the switch.

One of the sillier ideas I've heard is that one letter per day is taken off existing custom titles until the guy pays a set fee of $19.99 to Twoplustwo to hold on to what he's got left.

i know i had to actually work for mine. it took something like 20 reviews back when the custom titles weren't so common.

if i could have just picked it right off the bat, i don't think it would have been nearly as cool
