McGill/Canada inferiority complex brag

this one is for the jew crew from McGill (ahnuld, ansky, requin). Not bad considering McGill is chronically underfunded and has been coasting on its reputation until Munroe-Blum took over.

Brag: tuition was like $5000 CDN a year for me (and probably $1000 for ahnuld)

McGill tops on continent: global survey Peggy Curran, The Montreal Gazette

Published: Wednesday, November 07

McGill University is the cream of Canadian schools, the best public university in North America and ranks 12th among the world's top 200 universities, according to a prestigious global survey.

Released today, the Times Higher Education Supplement has McGill bounding up from last year's 21st place showing based on such factors as emphasis on science programs, the strong contingent of international students and faculty, student/faculty ratios, and publications by faculty and graduate researchers. Harvard placed first on the list, while Oxford, Cambridge and Yale tied for second spot.

The report puts McGill ahead of such research-intensive powerhouses as Duke, Johns Hopkins, Stanford and Cornell. Findings are based on a combination of facts and opinions, with more than 5,000 academics around the world invited to rate a given institution. A key change in methodology this year made it impossible for professors to rate their own school.

"I'm really thrilled," said McGill principal Heather Munroe-Blum, who sees the results as a vindication of McGill's disciplined approach to academic planning, targeted hiring of 800 new professors and efforts to enhance both research and the undergraduate experience.

McGill is the only Canadian school to have placed in the top 25 since the Times of London launched the THES-QS World University rankings in 2004, although 10 other Canadian schools have clawed their way into the world's top 200. Universite de Montreal also saw a dramatic improvement, climbing from 181st last year to 108, while the University of Toronto slipped from 27th last year to 45th overall.

Other Canadian campuses that made the grade are University of British Columbia (33), Queen's (88), University of Alberta (97), McMaster (108), Waterloo (112), University of Western Ontario (126) Simon Fraser (139) and University of Calgary (166).

Munroe-Blum credits initiatives by the Canadian and Quebec governments, like the Canada Research Chair program and fellowships for graduate students, with helping universities raise their profile on the world stage.

She dismissed the notion that McGill's strong ranking could backfire, prompting Quebec to assume it doesn't need any more money. Yes, it's encouraging to see McGill's ability to "punch above its weight," she said, but just imagine what it could do if it weren't struggling to keep pace with well-heeled schools in the United States, Europe and most recently, Australia, which has invested huge amounts of money into post-secondary education in the past decade.

That's pretty interesting, I would've thought that McGill would try to emphasize what I think of as their major strength, which is----2aeioteoptayu890

Beyond that, basing rankings for undergraduate education on the prestige of the research producing activities of the university has always seemed very bizarre to me.

But nice work. McGill's a solid school.

so by that logic an Arts student with a CGPA of 4.0 cannot be ranked against an Arts student with a CGPA of 2.5 because they didn't take every single English class?

Re: McGill/Canada inferiority complex brag

WTF Gild that is not my point at all.

My point is that saying "McGill is the best school" is meaningless, because nobody wants to go to the "best school" they want to go to the best arts school, med school, tech school, etc.

mehhhh lemme play devil's advocate for a moment because Toronto is growing on me.

Imo...from living 5 years (school+working for 8 months there) in Montreal and living almost two years in Toronto...

Montreal is much better on the following things:
-quality of life (rent, cheap booze, etc)
-bar/club scene
-college life (McGill >>>>>> a school like Ryerson or UofT in terms of overall awesomeness)
-as a place to retire (Toronto is much more expensive to live where the action is, Montreal you can get a huge condo for cheap a block away from the Montreal Jazz fest)
-as a place to live during the summer (Montreal festivals, ie jazz fest and comedy fest>>>>>>>Toronto festivals like caribanna and all the other crap they put on...srsly I went to a blues fest in Toronto and it was like white 40-something fatty central and the music sucked).
-if you are French (ldo)
-hotter women (mostly because of McGill/Concordia/UofM chicks)
-better place to visit for the weekend
-better strip clubs

Toronto is a much better place to

-live your 20s, post school (if you've got money it is waaaay more ballin')
-the best restaurants are better and MUCH more expensive, although the overall average quality of a Montreal restaurant is higher
-better transit/infrastructure (Montreal is falling apart from the inside, at least more than Toronto is)
-basically the center of Canada if you are involved in anything financial...Montreal sucks for jobs in most big sectors related to Wall Street/Bay Street
-if you are an Anglophone (good luck getting a job in Quebec without speaking fluent French)

Re: McGill/Canada inferiority complex brag

are rankings that important? can someone tell me what wisconsin is ranked (if it's ranked at all)

Gildwulf 11-16-2007 05:11 PM

Re: McGill/Canada inferiority complex brag

addendum:

This may sound like heresy but Toronto also has a MUCH better music scene, particularly jazz. Montreal is known for its jazz scene because a) they get a lot of big draws at the Montreal Jazz fest every year and b) they were THE scene in the 60s in Canada. Basically the industry has dried up and Toronto is a much more vibrant and lively jazz music scene (this is verified by most of my professional music friends).

There are jazz clubs in Toronto that have a different jazz band play at brunch, afternoon and night 7 days a week (21 different bands a week!). In Montreal you basically have two choices for major jazz bars: Upstairs and Biddles (now called something retarded), the former of which is really overpriced and small and the latter is really tacky and pretty traditional. You basically have to know sketchy jam session areas in the West Island or NDG to get any decent jazz in MTL anymore.

which is a [censored] joke, they give none of it to musicians

All the McGill jazzers have to do their final exam there as a performance on a weeknight and cover is usually free. A good mcgill jazz quartet is better than 90% of professional bands so I'd recommend going on a weeknight, getting a poutine around the corner and buying a drink there and nursing it (That's what i did when I was broke in undergrad and wanted to see my friends play).
