Half of these goals are goals like the fortune cookies you get with Chinese food these days actually contain fortunes. "You are well liked," is the one I got most recently; as my wife said, "Not only is that not a fortune, it's not even true!"

1. Ban Landonfan
2. Successfully debug my FORTRAN code. Have it incorporated into the next version of the program I'm updating.
3. Apply my code to tRNA. Have it work brilliantly.
4. Present my findings in San Diego. Receive much acclaim.
5. Drink as much as I possibly can while in San Diego. Pay for as little of it as possible (hopefully due to #4).

I won't be playing poker again before November.

Basically, the first version of this code I'm working on was written back in the 80s. Back then, the definitive language for scientific computing was FORTRAN. For subsequent versions, rather than completely rewrite something that already works well in C++ or something, the FORTRAN code has been updated and revised since then. This makes the lives of the original developers easier, but not mine. OTOH, updating C++ code can be a royal PITA, too, depending on how many pointer, object, and other data sctructure shenanigans have obfuscated things.

there is a reason the old version goes under the name FORTRAN 70...

I took a class in FORTRAN 90 a few years ago... my brain still bleeds when I see it. But its good for programming industrial applications'n such.
