~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
All I'm saying is putting us at 32nd in the league power rankings is ridiculous. I think when all is said and done the Chiefs are going to be 8-8, maybe 9-7. Yay not much to get excited about. But I'm sorry I have to much pride to see all the national pundits piling on like a bunch of freaking trained monkeys. We are not that bad.
Our defense is exactly what I thought they would be, good bordering on very good. Jared Allen back makes all the difference in the world. He and Tamba Hali are both pro bowl caliber players. Alphonso Boone has stepped up at tackle where we were horrible before this year. Donnie Edwards back as QB of the defense has been a big help, and frees Derrick Johnson to fly around and make plays. I see DJ making the pro bowl this year. Our safeties (who I doubt if Peter King could even name) are young and have a lot of potential.
Our offense is still something of a basketcase, no question. But Bowe looks like he may be the real deal, which could help open things up for LJ, which could get us into something like our midseason form last year. It's a huge IF. But you can't say there is no hope whatsoever. McIntosh has been fine at left tackle. Turley's run blocking is our biggest disaster on offense right now. Next to Huard's indecison/lack of accuracy/general suckiness. When he's running good though, he can be decent.
Which leaves of course... Herm/Solari's play calling. But that has to be fixable right? Maybe? I liked what we did in the 2nd half of this game. If teams are going to keep stacking up on LJ, we have to throw the ball down the field to Gonzalez and Bowe. The Chiefs just need to banish the Kris Wilson 1 yrd swing pass, and anything with a reverse in it, from their playbooks forever.
We shall see what happens. I just wanted to plant my flag now that we won't totally suck. Possibly we could even make a shot at the playoffs with a little luck. We have 6 of 8 at home after SD next week. Chiefs are always tough at home. And one of the road games is Oakland - no gimme but winnable and the Chiefs have owned the Raiders since the 80s. Put a few wins together and get some momentum like last year, who knows. No one in our division looks that good right now. God I love seeing the Broncos lose painfully.
I already have a bet in at over/under 7.5 wins (from before the season) or I might put some money on that. But I'd probably want some odds at this point.
Oh yeah, great analysis and thorough refutation of my points btw. I see you read and regurgitate the teachings of Bill Simmons as well. Man is a visionary.
Week 1: Houston 20, Kansas City 3
Week 2: Chicago 20, Kansas City 10
Week 3: Kansas City 13, Minnesota 10
So after a 3 point victory over scrub Minnesota, you decide to make your homer thread proclaiming that 1-2 Kansas City will win eight or nine games. And when everyone disagrees, we are "so annoying."
Re: ~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
Because they don't look good so far & I don't see 8 wins on their schedule. They don't have any really easier home games besides Oakland. They play some easier teams on the road but not enough to get to 8 even if they win all of them.
They probably need to beat the Jags or Bengals, being 1-5 at that point they won't make it to 8 wins.
Minnesota can't score with their terrible starting quarterback. You beat them by three at home with their third stringer starting, and you only won due to a blown call in the end zone against MN. Ya I would be super pumped if I was a KC fan.
Yes our defense is terrible. http://www.nfl.com/stats/team 4th in the league in total yardage. They've allowed six 2nd half points all season - w/o their best player for 2 games. Simply horrible. You guys are really doing your research and not just parroting stuff you read.
Receivers: Kinneson went down with a hamstring, but he'll be back. He had a great year last year which no one knows about because he doesn't play in the NFC East - bastion of all media coverage. If he played for the Giants we'd have a five minute update on his hamstring injury every day on Sportscenter. Bowe looked awesome today. All the Chiefs announcers and coaches were buzzing about him after the game.
QB and O-line have issues. I have granted that. Teams can go 8-8 with a shaky QB, patchy O-line, great running back and TE, okay receivers, and really good defense.
Things looked a lot bleaker last year when Green went down and we went 0-2. We finished 9-7. We have a better team this year. I've basically run down position by position.
We're better or the same at every spot except right guard. They moved Waters - a multi pro-bowler - to Will Shields spot. Our center is a pro-bowl candidate and Welbourn and McIntosh are ok. It's really only Turley that sucks, and really only at run blocking.
Green was horrible last year, almost all year. Huard had the 2nd highest QB ranking in the league for the 8 or 9 games he played. No one can say they know it's impossible he can somewhat back into that form. I'll take Huard over Grossman any day I'll say that. Chiefs made the playoffs almost every year in the 90s with all kinds of ridiculous journeyman QBs. They went 13-3 with Grbac one year and Bono another for god's sake.
Yeah they chump it up in the playoffs. Which they probably will again if they make it there. Again, just saying they don't suck. If they go 8-8 all you asshats better come back here and apologize for spouting off on subjects whence you know not.
I'm not saying they're in midseason form. They've been a basketcase offensively until pretty much the 2nd half of this game. The hope is they get some confidence and some rhythm going. It happened last year.
No game at arrowhead is a gimme for the other team. I'm pretty sure the Chiefs have the best home winning % of the last 20 years or something. Can't find proof. If not it's close. You guys really think Denver or SD look that great right now that they're going to be huge favorites at arrowhead? They usually lose there, even in years when they win 13+ games.
Denver is a couple miracles from being 0-3. SD is one game away from losing their season and seems to be self-destructing. BTW I don't think we'll win at SD next week. Maybe make it close, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get beat pretty bad, just to be clear. I'd just like to see us play well.
Jacksonville and Cincy are beatable at home. By then maybe we start rolling a little, break the Raiders' hearts like we always do. Again there's a lot of hope here. But I don't think it's completely unrealistic like a lot of people who don't really know this team that well or watch their games seem to think.
Re: ~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
The defense is young overall. We'll need two corners and an ILB in the next couple years, but everyone else is 4 years or less in the league. You need a few old guys out there.
We have a young WR, RB and QB (hopefully) that we're building the offense around. If Bowe can really step up and be as good as he's looked the last couple games, that makes things look a lot brighter.
Chiefs have always done better with a great defense and so-so offense. I think this formula works better with the arrowhead crowd.
My point is only that we aren't terrible. We may still get some bad luck and go 6-10. But I think with neutral luck and arrowhead magic we go 8-8. Higher with some good luck.
If we play well and get some bad breaks I hold by my statement. If we lay a bunch of eggs and look overmatched a lot, I'll come on here and mea culpa. I just wanted to make this post a) because we didn't have a Chiefs thread and b) so no one could call me a fair weather fan if we start winning a little.
Re: ~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
Dude, you beat a bad team, at home, by 3, due to a horribly blown call. I don't see how this is reason to get excited.
suzzer99 09-24-2007 11:01 AM
Re: ~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
Did I say I was hopeful solely because we beat a fairly lousy team by 3? I listed the players on our team, and what we were able to do last year with a worse team. The Chiefs have been in a funk since the playoff game last year. Lost 7 straight games if you count preseason. It's never easy to break out of a losing streak.
I'm just hoping they can build on this to get some of their confidence and rhythm back. SD had two losses last year, one of them was to us at arrowhead. When the Chiefs get rolling they're very very hard to beat at home.
That call wasn't at the end of the freaking game it was in the first half. We sat on the ball a lot at the end with the lead. Obviously the game unfolds differently if they get a TD there. Certainly it helped, but to say that gave us the game is silly. If I was on here whining about some call that cost us the game, I'm sure I'd get a lot of sympathy.
Also I agree that call looks bad from the replay. But you really can't see the ball the whole time from that angle, so I guess the guys in the booth deferred to the ref who was standing 5' away, with the perfect angle, watching the ball the whole time. Either that ball bounced a little, or that guy really really blew that call. Certainly possible.
And we have gotten raped on penalty calls the first two games this year. The league has even called the Chiefs to apologize for a call against TG in the Houston game that negated a TD and could have turned the tide. That's what happens when you look like morons out there (our offense). You tend to not get calls.
The worst thing about the Chiefs right now is their play calling. LJ and Huard were both basically bitching out the coaching staff in the first half yesterday. Which is scary, but it's better than just being overmatched. Huard is serviceable. At least he doesn't throw a lot of picks. And he can get hot.
I was waiting for Kyro to post before posting this, but have you looked at their schedule?
Sun 9/30 at San Diego 4:15 pm
Sun 10/7 Jacksonville 1:00 pm
Sun 10/14 Cincinnati 1:00 pm
Sun 10/21 at Oakland 4:05 pm
bye
Sun 11/4 Green Bay 1:00 pm
Sun 11/11 Denver 1:00 pm
Sun 11/18 at Indianapolis 1:00 pm
Sun 11/25 Oakland 1:00 pm
Sun 12/2 San Diego 1:00 pm
Sun 12/9 at Denver 4:15 pm
Sun 12/16 Tennessee 1:00 pm
Sun 12/23 at Detroit 1:00 pm
Sun 12/30 at NY Jets 8:15 pm
Winning 7 of those 13 games would be a tall order for all but a few teams in the NFL.
suzzer99 09-24-2007 02:05 PM
Re: ~~~ Official 2007 KC Chiefs Don\'t Totally Suck thread ~~~
The Chiefs will probably be favorites or very close at Detroit, at Oakland and most of their home games. Denver and Cincy look like crap. Jacksonville is tough, but we beat them pretty handily here last year when they still had playoff hopes. Tennesse is nothing spectacular, and if the Chargers are out of it by the time they come we'll be favorites.
No afc team except Indy and NE scares me at arrowhead and we only play Indy on the road. (We should just field all 2nd-stringers for that one.) Green Bay is a new wrinkle, but we very often destroy NFC contenders at arrowhead. Seriously, would you want to go to arrowhead when the Chiefs defense is rolling?
At Indy and at SD are the only two complete write-offs I see at this point. And I still have a faint glimmer of hope SD will melt down. Oh yeah and we always lose at Denver.
KC would not be favorites at Detroit if they played today. In fact, they wouldn't be favorites on a neutral field. Cinci and Denver may be playing like crap, but it's still better than what KC is playing like. And no, they will not be favorites at Oakland. Hell, they were only 3 points favorites at home against one of the worst teams in the league.
When was the last time Detroit was favored at the end of the year vs. a non-horrible team? If they Chiefs are terrible they will be favored. But if my hypothesis is at all correct, we will be.
Chiefs have won 8 in a row over the Raiders, we're 27-8 against them since 1990. Doesn't guarantee a win. But if the game is close late, that streak really starts to work for us and against them. They're improving. But you don't go from one of the worst teams in the league to good that fast.
The fact that we beat Denver and SD at KC last year, with a worse team than we have this year, and Denver and SD both had better teams (as it looks right now), and we usually beat both of them at arrowhead, means nothing right?
I've outlined why I think there is at least hope we will get out of our offensive funk. The offense doesn't have to be great for us to win at home, just not god-awful. If Huard can get in a rhythm like he did in the 2nd half vs. MN, then things will open up for LJ.
