1. The specific penalties if you were caught gambling online, say in a cafe?

[/ QUOTE ]

No idea but I'd say the risk of getting in trouble is somewhere between minute and non-existant. I saw many others playing poker from cafe's and I've done it a ton. Many places I've been already have Party and Stars installed.

I keep reading this but I have yet to see 'stars in an internet cafe and I've been to ~15

Go to Koh Sarn road, at the opposite end as Burger King. Take a left and there is a dive shop on the same side of the street as you, before the Sawadee Hotel.

Dave has like 12 internet stations in there all with Party and Stars on them. I played from there for weeks. Great guy too, British. Tell him you know me and he might even invite you to his home games

[/ QUOTE ]

Hell yeah. I'll be in that area in 2 days and will check it out.

If you want internet ANYWHERE, then buy a cell phone with bluetooth. Then you can use a laptop to access EDGE internet network. You cant play 12 tables at once but it should be more then enough to play 1 or 2 at a time.

have you done it? sounds like that would be worse than dial up in some places

I havent played poker on it but Ive used it for internet and it seemed fast enough.

If you are renting a house then get dsl. If you are staying in hotels/travling then bring a laptop and plug it in at netshops.

When I first came to samui I was playing and working in starbucks for a while.

All I was saying is if were going on a vacation pretty much anywhere, including Thailand, I sure as hell wouldn't be playing online poker. Obviously if you are staying there for an extended period of time its different.

yea yea I phrased it poorly. I was referring to all the people that were asking questions about connecting to the internet.

On a side note what is the usual alcoholic drink of choice there? Is it the same stuff that is over here? Do they drink much beer?

Oh man, just finished reading everything.

Degen, how is the golf around there? Also, have you been playing for long?

I play to a 13ish handicap and am addicted to golf (among other things).

[/ QUOTE ]

It is golf heaven here. There are tons of golf courses around including Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones designed courses etc. The Amata course is where they host some big tournaments and it is the nuts. One hole has an island green that you take a boat out to! Green fees including caddy are from 500baht and up. That is about $13 -$75 ish. It is great having your own caddy, it makes you feel like a pro golfer. hehe.. The caddies are often cute girls too. I recommend Panya Park about an hour from Bangkok city center. I'm going tomorrow morning actually

Check out this site for some good info on courses in thailand:

http://www.thaigolfer.com

ps. Some Driving ranges are very nice here too. All-Star Driving complex and the one at RCA are good.

pps. Killer place to buy golf stuff is in Silom in the Thaniya building. 4 floors of golf stores. All the big names and also used stuff. Epic. Golf kicks ass.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

I prefer Singha. Beer chang is usually reserved for farang who are scraping their last bacht out of their pockets. It tastes like ass and gives you a huge hangover.

Heinken is made locally jhere so its not exactly the same as you migh tbe used too.

Thais drink [censored] wisky (rum) which can be purchased very cheap.

The traditional drink while parting is to take a 5th of sangsom and 1 redbull and 1 coke and mike in a bucket of ice. This is called a "bucket" naturally.

I like to goto places that server good beer though (Guiness ) mmmmmm

Oh man. I don't think i'll be bothered to drag my own clubs there the first time around but what I hear it seems there should be no problem in renting very nice clubs? I'm lucky i'm a standard in everything so off the shelf clubs are perfect. But I will miss my pings

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

A Thailand checklist

- Thai street food = everything is fantastic, especially seafood, spicy
- tailored suits (a quality armani copy suit + shirt + pants < $150)
- fake diesel/D&G/versace/armani exchange/etc shirts everywhere for ~$3 each
- almost everything you could buy in the USA
+ Siam Paragon = larges luxury mall in southeast asia with Chanel/Versace/Gucci/Rolex type stores, has an imax theater and a giant aquarium floor
+ Emporium = smaller/older version of Paragon
+ MBK = cheaper stuff (take on the teen thais at LAN counterstrike)
+ Platinum = clothes

- BTS skytrain and MRT subway to travel around downtown Bangkok = fast
- Clubs = Qbar and Club Bedrock
- go-go bars = Nana & Soi Cowboy (Dollhouse has naked dancers)
- Cabaret Show - transvestite dancers
- Golf = world class courses
- Thai Massages = amazing, "Foot Massage, Sir?"
- Taxis = costs $1-2 to travel long distances
- Culture = 95% buddhist, extremely friendly, passive, polite, nice
- Weather = 85F daily and sunny (Sept/Oct it rains a bit, Nov-Feb is bit cooler but not much)

- Beaches/Islands = Phuket & Krabi, Kata Beach in Phuket is amazing. Patpong is full of bars and go-go girls, even kickboxing matches. Take the Phi Phi Islands Tour, James Bond Tour, 4 Islands Tour, scuba diving, jetski, snorkel, swim. Use AirAsia.com to travel there for <$40 from Bangkok

- History = Grand Palace (emerald buddha!), Ayutthaya (former capital)

- Muay Thai Kickboxing = "In Bangkok, Lumphini stadium and Ratchadamnoen have matches on alternate days of the week, usually consisting of eight bouts and starting at about 6pm."

- Thai Girls!

Yeah, rentals are no problem. Nicer courses have nicer clubs of course. I have had rental callaways that were pretty sweet. If you are here for any period of time, just put the clubs in luggage. I rock Ping's too - old school Ping Zings.

Hell yeah, I am up to date with that checklist! I finally checked the out Lumpinee fights last tuesday night. I was a bit surprised at the cost though. 2000b for first class. It was worth it though. We saw two killer knockouts.
