Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

I have recently gotten in touch with my inner Jew and am looking at places I can cut costs for my WSOP trip. I was wondering if it is even possible to pull this off or will they have security guards roaming and waking me up?

it's easy get a van with limo tints in the back and just move your van around each day.

This sounds more like a scene from Cool Hand Luke (van+parking lot in the desert)...

"...There's no playing grab-ass or fighting in the building. Any man playing grab-ass or fighting in the building spends a night in the box..."

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

Put a solar shade in the front, cover the other windows, snooze away. But that's gonna be very unpleasant. It's not super hot yet, being only June 1, but as I type this at 00:20 in Vegas it's 87F out there. Probably a bit hotter in the middle of a Rio parking lot radiating stored heat from the concrete. There are NEVER 8 pleasantly cool hours a day in mid summer to make sleeping at all comfy. If you were out where a breeze could hit you it might be bearable. But in a car? I suppose if you're the Navy Seal type who's been taught to enjoy sleeping in 100 degrees, ok. Otherwise I think you'll be awake in the heat until 3am, sleep for 3 hours, and then be awakened by the heat about 6am.

Your plan works for the "gonna be in Vegas one night, do I have to get a hotel room" trip where you won't die if you only managed to eek out 3 hours of sleep. Probably not a good long-term stragedy.

If you can't win an average of $100/day at the poker tables to cover modest food and lodgings, you have no business being in Vegas at all!

And WTF about taking a shower?!

I hope in hell that I don't have the misfortune to get seated next to you, if you go through with this tomfoolery!

Anyone else? Parking lot recommendations?

Duh, I'll take showers in the sinks in the Rio bathrooms. C'mon now.

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

Security probably patrols the parking garage so you would have to be out of sight. But there are tons of huge supermarket parking lots in town which you can sleep in. Back when I was a homeless climbing bum I lurked around Vegas no problem.

That said, things are probably too hot already. It's 2am and my ac is running to keep my house at 80.

Bring a small battery operated fan to help with the heat.

Or better yet, get a room downtown or somewhere else off the strip where the prices are much lower.

I slept in the parking lot at Bally's AC my first time there. It was the summertime and I DO NOT recommend it. Worst "night of sleep" ever.

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

i used to do this at foxwoods all the time but i definitely wouldn't try it during the summer in Vegas. You should be able to find cheap rooms really easily right now. This is not exactly a peak time for vegas.

Im booked at the Palace Station 39.99 a night, its a joke...
Thank me later, do not attempt, it will not be pleasent, you will be on constant stiff body, gross sweaty tilt.

I cracked up just reading the title of this thread. This is one of the worst ideas ever, you would be better off trying to take power-naps in the various sportsbooks. I'm staying at the IP and its $47-$57 during the week.

That would just encourage the bums. 'Round here, we try to run 'em outta town. Like by passing laws to make it illegal to feed 'em.

Here it is located at the corner of D-street and Bonanza, one block west of Main street near downtown Las Vegas. Look for the big blue cross. It will take some time to get to the Rio.

I saved up enough for school so I went back to Boulder, CO. Then I got in a $30K ski accident so I took another year off and lived in Breckenridge and went skiing everyday.

u F*er! I got in a 30k skiing accident too, but it cost me 14k... Vermont state laws protecting the ski industry suck, my accident was likely the fault of the ski bindings. Sleeping in a car to save money is a horrible, horrible idea. Vegas will be hot as hell, and there is nothing more unpleasant than waking up at 7am covered in sweat in the backseat of a hot car.

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

The first time I went to Vegas, I drove there alone on a whim. I got off the freeway downtown, and the first casino I came accross was the Golden Nugget, so I parked there, and went in to try to get a room, but it was about midnight, and they didn't have a room for me until 11am. Unfortunately, after driving for about 10 hours I only had about 6 hours of poker in me (fortunately I rocked the 2/4 table for enough to pay for a cheap GN room,) so I tried sleeping for a few hours in my car. It being summer and all, I became so overheated while fading in and out of consciousness, that I felt sick for the rest of my stay. Of course this didn't stop me from playing about 12 hours of poker a day...

I hate to admit this but I slept in a van in the bellagio parking lot a couple weeks back I left the van running with the ac on because even two weeks ago it was too hot to have it off for more than 30 min or so. I wouldn't recomend it for more than one night. if you do it dollar has vans with stow and go seating so you can put the seats down and lay flat. no one bothered me but I was only there for about 4 hr's

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

When I was at the WSOP in 2005 I stayed at the Gold Coast next door part of the time.
Walking over to the Rio I would pass a couple of homeless dudes sleeping in the grass next to the big parking garage there. Couple cops drove past as I was crossing the street and had to see them...but they didn't seem to care.
One of the guys had no shoes and all this green mold/fungus on his feet. Attractive!!

Anyway, it looked like crashing out there in the grass and shade was working out just fine and dandy for these guys. So I recommend doing that.

I really dont understand how you can enjoy LV w/o having a bed, an AC, and a sink/shower. It seems like staying in your car at night would make the trip suck. I dunno, maybe it depends on your car. I've got a tahoe that I took the rear seats out of, so I could lay down back there, albeit in the fetal position, and leave the car on, but wtf.

You can stay at the Frontier for about $50 a night iirc, so why not?

I don't think you realize how hot it can get in the backseat of a car. Not to mention cramped.

I actually think that having to stay in Vegas like this would make me want to leave and would effect my play.

If you over sleep you could die. Is was 115 degrees the 2nd week in July last year.

Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

It makes more sense to sleep at the airport. I knew a guy who used to do this at LAS but it was pre-911. But I still see people sleeping in airports, and no one pays much attention. These days if you want to sleep airside, where most travelers sleep, you would need a refundable air ticket so you would have a boarding pass to allow you to clear security. Then cancel the ticket before the flight for the refund. Seems it would be a hassle to do this every day. In New Orleans the homeless I've seen just sleep landside and don't pass through security. Haven't noticed visible homeless at LAS but I haven't looked for them either. I only sleep in airports when I am legitimately traveling, but no one has objected to my pillows, blankies, and so on. And airports are cool. Sometimes a little too cold, actually. You could die of dehydration in short order in a parked car in Nevada in summer. So you really do need to get indoors if you ask me. Oh, I recommend ear plugs and eye masks for sleeping in airports. There's a website that reviews the airports and tells the best place to sleep, but I usually just try to find a gate out of the way and curl up on the floor. Can't remember if LAS has those arms on chairs to keep you from stretching out on the actual chairs, but I'm thinking, yeah, unfortunately, I think they do. So it's the floor if you can't sleep sitting up. Still better than being boiled alive in a parked car.

Also, if you give any kind of action at many of the smaller Harrah's around the country, at slots or tables, they should be mailing you coupons like crazy for free hotel rooms, how do you think they have all those old folks playing quarter slots staying free in Vegas?

I think I remember someone posting this same idea year. If someone out there in 2+2 land has the time to look thru the search function, find the guy that asked this same question last year and ask him how it went.....

My guess is that he isn't around anymore because his brain is cooked from sleeping in his car.
