Why was Danica Patrick the only female race at Indy?

I'm not a racing fan, and I'm not a race car driver. But as I casually watched the Indy 500 and they droned on and on about how amazing it was that Danica Patrick was racing, my only thought was "Why is that amazing? Why isn't half the field filled with women?"

There's no reason a woman can't drive just as fast as a man. You put a competent driver in a fast car with a good crew and sprinkle a little bit of luck, and you've got a winner.

It just seems that racing is an old boys club where they all pretend that they have special magical talents. It's a shame that Danica Patrick was the only female driver in the entire field.

There were two women in the race one year. Lyn St. James and Sarah Fisher. They crashed into each other.

Does that answer your question?

i'll assume that this question is a joke.

(the original question i mean, not the question about whether or not that answers his question. it answers it quite well in my personal opinion.)

The main reason she's any good is because she is alot lighter than other drivers. The best men are better than the best women in everything.

Just because guys may be better, doesn't mean I don't prefer a woman :)

Racing takes great reflexes and stamina. Men are better at that than women. Plus, cars are traditionally "male" things to care about. Young girls don't take an interest in cars so aren't pushed into racing at early ages like boys are.

I thought it was because they weren't allowed to drive while talking on cell phones?

The years I went (early 90s to early 2000s) we always joked that Lyn drove the "Tampax Car". In fact, one year the truck parked next to us on the infield said "Lyn Swallows" on the window. She was the last driver you wanted to draw in the pool the night before on Georgetown.

That said, Danica is an excellent driver. She fits well in the team system set up by Rahal-Letterman. She's been in the running at the end in each of the last two years. Keep that up and she'll eventually be drinking milk when it's over ne of these times. She's young enough that she'll get 20 tries at it with any luck.
