How long until my car gets traction??
 

i have approx. 3 inches of sleet/ice preventing my car from backing out of my parking space. i purchased 8 boxes of rock salt and dumped it all around and behind the tires so i can get the [censored] out. approximately how long will it take for the process to complete?

10 minutes, get a friend to drive it in reverse and you push from the hood.

tree branches (I always used pine) can work pretty well, stick them under the tires.

edit: the answer to your actual question requires some knowledge about the salt, the ambient temperature, and some differential equations. so you're probably not going to find out from OOT.

if its very cold like below 20 the salt wont melt the ice. then you have to get ice under the tires and spin them to get some heat. but really you need to get something solid under the tires and back out over it.
magnesium chloride will work faster as well.

current temp. is 26 degrees. i'm going to pick up some kitty litter and dump it behind the tires for added traction.
