Should I move to no-limit?
 

Used to be a winning 2/4 limit player. Been out of the poker scene for 18 months. Decided to pick things up again. How's the game like today? Should I continue to play limit or move to no-limit? Is no-limit where the money at now?

Some of the factors include:
-your current enjoyment of either game
-your future enjoyment of either game

-your current skill at either game
-your future skill at either game

-your current profitability at either game
-your future profitability at either game

these can really only be answered yourself.

I moved from limit to no limit a few months ago. Wish I made the move years ago. I like the play better, and there are certainly more fish in NL than limit now.

NL is where the most play and money is now.

It's all about bankroll with NL. Even with a bankroll of 500bb you could go bust in one night.

You need to maintain a bankroll of atleast 1000bb's for whatever limit you are playing.

Id suggest more than that.Maybe 2x-5x that much depending on how you play.

But, if he is playing 25 MAX, 1k should be sufficient. Any of the no max tables you would need substantially more then that.

Bankroll is important, skill is important, game selection is important, strong mental discipline is important. It's all about doing all these, and more, well. Do too much of any of these things badly and you will likely be a losing NL player.

10 minutes of tilt, for example, can cost a few BBs in limit but cost you half your bankroll in NL.



Basically, all I'm saying is if you switch games, be prepared to work at it. NL may be more profitable at SS but if your BE at limit 2/4 I don't think changing will magically make you a winner.

I'm primarily a full ring limit player and I still do just fine (though I only play 2-3 hours a day max since I'm also a full-time stay at home dad, my baby's momma makes the big bucks). I also generally play higher than 2/4 where games are even less frequent (I know the definition of "fine" may vary so I'll just say I'm happy with the $30-50 hr I make incl. bonuses and rb). The key thing for me is I just keep money at 2-3 sites at any given time and look for where the games look good and be willing to bounce around.

I prefer limit cash games because I know I have some weaknesses in my game that could prove fatal at NL (tendecy for crazy monkey tilting, doing stupid things when bored, tendency to chase, too curious, etc.) Yes the games are a bit harder, the bonuses more scarce, but it has just meant I had to learn to play better poker (and generally sticking to 2-3 tables for me anyway). Oh, and I also had to get really strict about bankroll management and NEVER NEVER play blackjack again.

There is certainly more money in NL and it seems like PLO is now the "hot" game (I'd absolutely get killed at Omaha) but I'm happy with my small piece of the poker pie. Why not try a little of both and see what happens?
