PNL Study Group Assignment #1

My local Borders and Barnes and Nobel don't have the books yet, but Amazon does and is the cheapest at $19.77. The Amazon link:

here

First assignment for Monday August 20, 2007 is the first two chapters of Basics: Odds and Outs and Bet Sizes.

We'll be doing a chapter a day until we get to harder stuff.

August 20: Odds and Outs and Bet Sizes
August 21: Stack Sizes
August 22: Pot Size
August 23: Commitment
August 24: Pot Control

Beginner questions more than welcome. Let's keep it friendly and hopefully make you some money.

Looking forward to it!

Matt

Link to etiquette/rules/plan for study group?

This the first I am participating in, so very excited and eager to participate.

So, when Aug. 20 rolls around what happens? Do folks start flooding in with questions, thoughts, situations? Hands that illustrate the examples (or violate them)?

What about prior to Aug. 20? Do we talk about stuff prior to then?

Re: PNL Study Group Assignment #1

I'll hold back with my main question that I posted in the brew a couple weeks back** until we get there and will participate rigorously until then.

Thanks for doing this.

______
** Just to get people started on thinking (don't debate this, yet!) my question is regarding the SPR of 13 that is basically exactly what we get in the usual 100bb uNL game where we raise 4bb and get one caller for a HU flop. My question is if the most common situation we are in day after day is exactly the one that is identified as the worst situation shouldn't this change our general approach to the game?

Can this thread get linked up in the essential thread sticky so when it gets lost in the shuffle it can be found more easily?

Me too. Especially if beginners questions are going to be welcome.

Hate to be pedantic but ProfessionalPoker.com have it listed at $19.76. (Even cheaper if you opt for their B-stock.) I've no connection with that store but in my experience they're way quicker than Amazon.

Re: PNL Study Group Assignment #1

So is the assignment just to read the chapters, or will we be given further instructions on applying what we've read to our actual play?

Any good instructional designer knows that after the information is presented, the class participants need to apply what they've learned and then get feedback on their performance.

This is a book study group, not free coaching. As far as I can tell we'll just read the chapters, discuss them, and maybe talk amongst ourselves about how we've been putting them into practice and what the results have been. The authors will most likely chime in as they desire.

Re: PNL Study Group Assignment #1

Just finished my first pass through the book (and it became very clear that more than one pass will be needed). This sounds like a great way to go back and study it in depth.

Do we need to do anything special to sign up, or just read the assigned chapters and post questions/comments?

Mine will be shipped on the 20th so I guess I'll just star commenting once it arrives.
I reccomend one thread per chapter for the sake of easier reference later etc.
I'll try the method recommended SQRRR here:

i'm in too. this sounds like a really good way to get a good discussion going.

maybe it would benefit us to have this in some sort of a more live setting? like on mIRC or something? just seems like that way we could get more said faster and it'd be a little easier to follow. also, just knowing that there are people out there that will want to just talk about the book and seeing who they are will be nice.

I just called a local Waldenbooks/Borders and they have it in stock! Driving there right after I get off work. 30% OFF coupon FTW!

Thanks in advance for doing this Matt. The timing could not be better for me as my game has tanked recently.

I just got back from Borders. They had the book in stock but had not unpacked and put them on the shelf yet.

One of the employees got one for me from the stock room and I will be ready to roll on Monday.

i work full time and will need to visit the thread intermittently. Sunny would probably be better at doing something on mIRC.

Just about finished it, I feel like the book was a revelation overall and i'm in if there's a study group involved. Will be posting from AC till Wednesday so I will get to test SPR along with everything else I learned live.

Thanks for doing this Matt.

hi guys,

I'd be willing to do something on mIRC. Perhaps we should do it on a different day/time as this study group though.

Open to suggestions on a day/time.
