Looking for a beach trip, no passport

I'm getting short-term braces to deal with a little smile defect I've been wanting to fix, and I basically want to just go to a tropical location by myself and hide out for a while.

Problem is I don't have a passport (I'm American btw, and I will get a passport eventually but won't have it in time for when I want to leave). Where can I go? Reasonably cheap would be nice. Internet for poker purposes is a must.

Nowhere outside of the US, I believe.

I don't know if it's like this in US, but if you apply in person with your travel itinerary, you can get your passport in time (and pay more). Look into it.

Maybe Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is the only place cheap that comes to mind.
Hawaii and the USVI are expensive, and you need a passport for anywhere else.

when is your trip? you can pay a bit extra for them to rush a passport for you. i did this and it was like 2 weeks or maybe even shorter.

The northern Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida) is just as cheap as Puerto Rico. Cheaper really, in many places. I don't fully understand how soon you are leaving, but IME for October especially after the first week the western Gulf (Texas, Louisiana) will have a lower risk of hurricane than the Atlantic coast (Florida) or the Caribbean (Puerto Rico). Right now the risk is huge in the entire region. The risk will be lower in the entire region for November. Hawaii is not cheap IMHO.

I would've mentioned South Texas (Padre Island, etc), except OP specified tropical. It ain't tropical, it's just hot.

North Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi all start to cool off when the hurricane threat abates, and it's not really true beach weather.

US Citizens can go to Mexico, Canada and Bermuda with a proof of passport application if you don't receive it in time.

Oh, just looked it up and that provision expires Oct 1, 2007.

I think this comes down to Puerto Rico vs Hawaii depending on where you live and how much money you want to spend. I actually liked PR more than Hawaii and its definitely cheaper so that would be my choice.

South Gulf could work, but it just doesn't have to same appeal to me, of course I've never been there so what do I know.

I just spent a month in Daytona Beach at a luxury condo...

It was suprisingly chill and not as trashy as I thought it be....you can get some great deals on extended stay there also...the built up too much during the boom.

The beaches were awesome BTW.
