\"First\" Posts in NVG.

First, In on the ground floor, this thread will be epic, etc. Today I started just deleting them where I found them. They don't serve any purpose and just clog up threads and make them unreadable. I'm not taking any action against the users who post them, and don't intend to start, but I think I'm just going to keep deleting them, unless anyone else in NVG has a strong objection. Thoughts?

This is a good idea. It's better than making a rule like "no 'first' posts." You just go in there quietly and clean up the thread so it doesn't contain so many useless/lame filler posts. People will hopefully realize their efforts to be first have been fruitless and the trend will calm down.

I wonder if there is some way to simply stop showing the number of posts of someone who makes stupid posts solely to increase the post count.

Maybe that (along with the deletions) would take away some of the incentive for some of these individuals to make meaningless "first" posts.

You can do a number of fun things along those lines in vbulletin, such as (but not limited to) setting their post count to an arbitrary number or subtracting 1 from their post count each time they post in a forum.

I can see the headline now:

POG POSTERS RESET INTO NEGATIVE NUMBERS OVERNIGHT!

Why not? I'm not talking about banning, or even warning people for doing it, hell, I don't even want to take the time to pm them. I'm just talking about nuking them as I see them to improve large thread readability.

Thats fine, and I'll stop doing it, I'm just curious as to why? Do you feel the "first" posts add to the conversation and threads in some way that I'm missing, other than making it so that people have to scroll through 20 "in on the ground floors" whenever there's an important thread before getting to any content?

jman, you are pissing me off. I have no objection to what you are doing. You should check out the QFT thread for my feelings on stuff like that.
