Terrible dealer tries to get the action kicked out.
 

Situation: The riverboat poker room is on my way home from work. It's 4 tables in the pit, 2 are NL and 2 are 4/8. Most of the dealers talk too much and slow the game. Some appear to be more interested in MNF than dealing their game. About half the time the floor is a dual rate dealer who knows his stuff, but most of the actual suits are clueless about poker.

The last time I played, the game's action player finally snapped on one of the smartass slow dealers and just about got kicked out. One of the regulars smoothed it over, but it wasn't because the dealer/management understood they were wrong. The regular just asked the dealer to not kill the action and slipped him a couple of bucks.

How should I handle this? Do I have any recourse besides just going to out of town rooms?

Probably not, unless you can afford to buy the riverboat. I mean, what else would you propose to do? You can surely complain to management that their poker room staff sucks at life, but if it's as bad as you say, reasonably competent management would have probably already fixed it.

I figure those dealers are makeshift poker dealers if their "poker room" is really nothing more than 4 tables in the pits. Do you know if they keep their own tokes or not?

This makes a difference, there's usually not as big an emphasis on dealer speed when tokes are pooled.

There isn't much you can do. You could talk to the director/manager of the table games/poker and let him know. You shouldn't expect much from a 4 table room. Most small rooms inside normal casinos aren't extremely professional. I usually find several pet peeves at most small poker rooms. If you don't like it, file a complaint see if it is fixed and if not go somewhere else.

Kind of depends on just how he 'snapped' on the dealer. If he threatened him at all, yes, he should've been booted.

OP seems to think that an "action player" should get more leeway. He would probably support kicking out a rock who 'snapped' the same way.

This room was 7 tables, then closed for about 6 months, then reopened in the pit. Management has always been an issue, it's all pit critters or dual rates. The issue with the dual rates is that they're also the best dealers, so we're stuck with the flotsam and jetsam while a perfectly good dealer stands there wearing a tie.

Dealers keep their tokes, but obviously closing the room wasn't beneficial to the quality of the dealer pool. Combined with the shorter lineup, now we see this guy about twice as often as we did before.

After repeated requests for the dealer to speed it up from action guy and another player, the action guy slapped the table in the one seat. He may have said something, I didn't hear it from the 9 seat. There was no credible threat of violence.

It's unacceptable that this dealer performs the way he does. Would I wring my hands if a rock couldn't take it any more and got booted? No. Would I support the decision? No. This dealer is bad for the game. On a weekend night, I'm willing to drive 150 miles round trip and get a hotel room to stay away from this game.

Am I concerned that a guy who would be fired on his first shift in Vegas may run off one of the few guys in this game who buys in for the max and creates action on a Monday? Yes.

Come to New Orleans and play at Harrah's more. The dealers are real pros [img]/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img].
