Please help me pick out an awesome desk

I just moved and it's time to get a new desk.

I'm starting a new job as a biophysics postdoc, so I'll need the desk for a couple of things

1. Reading and writing. Like doing math/physics homework.
2. Computer stuff. Both for work and for poker.

So, I figure this is basically like getting a really good desk for school. I've been thinking of two main options:

1) Get a table. I can spread papers and books around when I'm working, and I can get a stand or something for the monitor so that it's at a reasonable height.

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/660/tablejh7.jpg

2) Get an awesome desk. I was really leaning towards table until I saw this desk.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6766/desk1zh9.jpg http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1735/desk2do2.jpg http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7584/desk3em1.jpg http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5549/desk4mq3.jpg http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6296/desk5yq8.jpg http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/7772/desk6ot0.jpg

It looks like it'll do just about everything I want. It's a little pricey, though. I don't know anyone who has one, so I can't try it out before I buy.

Anyway, I've looked at sites for ergonomic desks, computer desks, etc., and haven't found much that looks good.

So, what do you say OOT? Does anyone have a desk they really love?

It's all the same desk, but I'm still leaning towards table. Do you have any advice on worthwhile desks?

Ikea Jerker?

all the shelves hanging on the side are optional.

Yeah, I would just keep it simple when it comes to desks. I'm not sure how much room you have, but here's the desk I have:

It's not bad I guess, and really comes in handy when you have a lot of work spread out.

Anything that doesn't have room for 4 monitors is crap.

yeti- the jerker looks like a good option. thanks.

solids- that looks pretty nice. the link you sent was from some UK furniture store. do you know where to get one in the states? this one from overstock.com looks like it's probably the same thing.

OP- This is actually the exact desk I have:

Staples

Not a bad deal for $100, imo.

If you don't live near an IKEA, shipping charges are pretty rediculous for the jerker.

I got some crap at Wal-mart for 40 bucks for my computer. It's actually very compact but has enough room for all my stuff 24" monitor, etc. It's actually the perfect size and will probably keep it for as long as it lasts then buy another one when it wears out. I know they stock it at my local Wal-Mart but I can't find it on their website.

I have a separate table to do my study, paperwork, reading, homework because I never really have to go between books and computers, I'm either doing bookwork or computing, usually never both at the same time and this way when I'm trying to focus on bookwork I'm not distracted by computer games and forums imo.

This I got from Ikea and used all through college. It is spacious enough to do homework and the height is adjustable. But my chair sucks, so I'd spend the money on that.

I went to buy a Jerker a couple of weeks ago and Ikea had replaced it with a new pos desk. It wasn't as nice and was very cheaply made. Guy at the store said people come in every day for a Jerker and complain about the replacement. In Canada btw.

The next desk I get will be a Sit-to-Stand.

Ikea used to make a good one but they seem to have discontinued it. Here are a few :

Re: Please help me pick out an awesome desk

There seems to be a dearth of good products in the desk world these days. Personally I prefer just going to an office supply store and buying a big standard flat desk, maybe buy a drawer compartment if you want.

Plenty of space for all the stufff you need, and none of the crappy monitor stands and shelves and [censored] no one needs.

Re: Please help me pick out an awesome desk

Just get a huge ass piece of wood and some prefab legs. Put a nice lacquer on it (or whatever you call that [censored] in English), and you're done.

You probably want to raise it to 86cm also. Low desks are gay.

Also easy for transport btw.
