Our old friends variance

What does everyone do when a big downswing hits them?

Personally I've gone on a 22 game run in Sit N Go's without even cashing (ROI was 16% over 800 games prior to this). On a brighter note I've taken the advice I've given in the past and focused on cash games for the time being and I'm running very hot for the month with a bb/100 of 17!!!!

It's all swings and roundabouts it seems.

I've got his book. Just going through a terrible run of bad beats but I've been through it before so I know it'll come to an end. It's just a matter of riding it out.

I stay away from poker for a while. Also I'll read a poker book instead of playing.

In reality, I do the exact opposite. I play even more. I play to get through the downswing. As long as I understand my game, and know that I am playing winning poker, I know that even the worst downswings will eventually end and I will be on the winning side of the game again eventually.

So in my opinion make certain you are playing your A-game and simply keep playing.

Staying away from poker will not halt variance. It may help you if you have tilt issues but nothing else.

The more you play the more you come to accept variance is part of poker. As long as you are correctly bankrolled and can keep playing your A game then just keep playing as per normal and variance will turn.

What are people's thoughts on temporarily moving down a level? Helpful to get through a downswing or possibly detrimental to your game?

No problems with that at all - it can help some people and is the right thing to do if your bankroll calls for it.
