Hi,

after my mental downs and the "Why should I quit with poker ?" post. I reached the second stepof thinking. I am getting ready for the next weekend to try a shot at the 200NL game at my local casino again.

Today I wanna discuss the buy in question. Should I buy in as a short stack ? or as a big stack ?

I am getting used to buy in for a full stack, but I know also the positive effect of buying in as a low stack. The last time I played at the table I lost 400 Dollars in two days of playing - the hole full stack each time I bought in.

Playing with a short stack of 100$ (its the minimum buy in there) has the advantage to be in a hand as a hugh favorite without giving the opponents the odds to call you to bust you.

The other side is I know I am the best player, because I dont get involved with big money with hands that are marginal.

But I am very capable to put a play on my opponents which I wouldnt do with a short stack.

I hope you have any hints for me ? Please dont discuss the question from the aspect of mathematics. I know all these edges from books and that this play is positiv when you are not able to make good decisions. Please discus this first step for getting ready for the weekend from my personal view of the situation that I dont have a proper bankroll to buy in another 200$.

If you believe you are the best player, you should definitaly buy in with a full stack. It's not impossible, but it is more difficult to have a great edge in skill when you're a very short stack and have only so many moves.

To be honest, I would reconsider playing this weekend if you're only playing on one bullet. The psychological effect that having only what's in front of you to play with can really mess up how you play. I did this when I first started out in the casino, and many of my plays were made while I thought, "darn, I don't want to go broke, so I'll do the safe thing" and then I would end up missing a great spot that I could have made a lot of money, if I was willing to risk going broke.

So I would caution you to rethink your plan of going with only one full buyin. I would not buy in short to a game in which I felt I had an edge in skill; I don't think many of the other players here would either. I would go with at least 400-500, perhaps 600. It may help you keep a level head in situations where you may want to risk it all, but wouldn't if you only had a shallow pocket.

having 1 buyin is a total joke. If you are thinking of shorstacking b/c you don't want to lose more then I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend you play lower. $200 is not even properly rolled for NL25. I don't care if you are Patrick Antonius, anything can happen in the short term.

It sounds like a huge reason you are unhappy with your results in poker is that you play way above your limits. You should never be playing with a buyin that is really significant to you. You absolutely cannot be properly psychologically prepared if you are afraid to buy in again.

Ty for your answeres and new things to look at it.

I defnetly not afraid to lose that one roll. Dont think that I am a kind of player that thinks hmmm, better save here some money because I am out of it after that move or call. I trust my instincts and I trust the math I know, when I know my opponents is a underdog I keep betting. He must getting lucky against me nothing else.

The other part is - yes I am playing limits I cant affort to play. That was to problem of my hole poker carrer I never had a proper bankroll to play poker. The only thing I had was when I am favorite I get my money in, no matter what even when I lose my stack!

Oh no, I just wanna say I am not stupid to get broke with a hand I think my opponent has a better one.

If you are playing a 1/2 200NL game with a $400 max buy-in, then I would recommend bringing at least $1000 in cash, and buy-in for $200 (100 big blinds). Keep your stack at 100 big blinds while you play. When/if you start winning, you'll get deeper. When/if you get below 100 big blinds, take some extra chips out of your pocket and "top off" between hands back up to 100 big blinds.

If you're only bringing one buy-in, realize that your day of poker could last all of 15 minutes... Keep $20 in reserve to play nickel slots in case someone (apart from you) gets lucky (assuming that you're going to a casino with friends and need to do something while they lose their money)...
