Should The Black Have Played?

Playing 1/2NL at Viejas and I'm new to the table. I know that blacks don't play on this table, but blacks not playing means they are not allowed on the table at all. Guy next to me has a black on the table so I think they dealer is just allowing it or waiting for it to be broken down by a chip runner.

I get into the very first hand with this guy. He raised preflop all his chips he has left, minus his black, which was like $15. He did not throw in his all-in button. I usually play very loose when I first get to a table not minding if I drop a buyin early if I have the chance to catch and double up through someone. I hit bottom 2 on the flop and I had put him on a high pair, so I push all-in.

The guy says to me "I'm all-in", I mention the black chip and the dealer tells me that the black doesn't play. I raise a little hell saying it shouldn't be on the table, to which another player at the table replies "he's been using it as a card protector since he got here". He was trying to say that it's obvious the guy isn't playing with it, but that's :

1)Not obvious to me who is a new to the table
2)Mixing the black in with his live chips
3)Even more a reason why it shouldn't be on the table as it should have been noticed a long time ago

I argue with the dealer for a little and she asks me if I want the floor. I tell her no as I'm sure the floor is just going to come over and repeat "black doesn't play".

Should the player have been forced to play it?

The rule seems pretty clear cut. You said you knew blacks didn't play. Are you sure about the blacks not allowed on the table? Think of it objectively. Why didn't you say anything before the hand if you were upset about the black being on the table? What if this guy had top set, what would you think about his black playing then?

the fact that it doesn't play sounds pretty dumb to me and i odn't understand the reasoning. seems like any casino chip should play when its on the table.

for your situation, i don't think you can argue with house rules, but you're right that it shouldnt have been on the table in the first place.

Blacks are not allowed on the table at all. They usually color down greens also because they claim it causes confusion.

I was fine with the black playing. I wish they would allow it because too often I see people with 6-8 stacks of red and a ton of stacks at a table usually drives me nuts. I wasn't trying to angle shoot anyone by only hoping it would play after I get into a hand with the guy. I only got into the hand with the guy because I assumed since it was on the table that it was live. I probably should have asked before calling his preflop raise. The guy did end up taking the hand when the board paired up the wrong way for me on the turn, so I would have lost a lot more money had they let it play. That doesn't change my opinion though that it should have played.

Are you just claiming the rule is bad, or that, despite everyone knowing the rule, the dealer should have made an exception in this case and made him put the chip in?

I'm not crazy about the rule, but if it's a rule and everyone knows it, I don't see what the problem is.

Dealer deserves several KITNs for just sitting there and allowing this to happen.
