The 300 Spartans

So ahead of 300 I thought I'd watch the old version of the battle of thermopylae.

Its a pretty good film in terms of what it sets out to do ( deceit in politics with a love story ).

Anyone else rewatched this due to 300 due out soon and what did you think?

Its made me almost moist for 300's arrival

I think I have this movie recorded. If I do, I'll try and watch tonight and comment tomorrow. Nice idea.

Anyone read the graphic novel? It's a wonderful piece of art.

I watched this film, and thought it was a pretty good movie for a 60s sword+sandals fest. Ralph Richardson, Leonidas and Xerxes were all well cast in their parts. I was impressed how they kept to the basic true events (not usual in these sort of movies), and it was good old entertainment. I was disappointed they didn't even attempt to show hoplite battle tho.

The most striking bit outside the fighting was when Xerxes orders the women of his soldiers removed, because he wants his men to be eager to get to the women of Greece *brrrrr*

And yes, I'm keen to see 300. Can you tell?

sooo eager for 300.

I think what I most enjoyed about this film was the building storyline to the battles with the obvious political betrayal.

Read this here: http://www.shsu.edu/~his_ncp/Herother.html

"222. So the allies, when Leonidas ordered them to retire, obeyed him and forthwith departed. Only the Thespians and the Thebans remained with the Spartans; and of these the Thebans were kept back by Leonidas as hostages, very much against their will. The Thespians, on the contrary, stayed entirely of their own accord, refusing to retreat, and declaring that they would not forsake Leonidas and his followers. So they abode with the Spartans, and died with them. Their leader was Demophilus, the son of Diadromes."

Interesting. Are there any experts on classical history around? I don't think the presence of others in any way diminshes what Leonidas and his hoplites chose to do, but it would be nice hear some props for the Thespians, too.

The comic is pretty good. Read it when I was in like 7th grade or something:

I'm pretty excited to see this movie...my school is hosting a thing for it so I'll be able to see it on Thursday night. I'll give you guys a quick review/what I thought of it that night.

I also did a short speech on Thermopylae as well. IIRC, the Greeks numbered something like 10,000 or somewhere around there, the persians several hundred thousand.

I watched it too- it was alright, nothing special. The love story was very meh.

In other news I am absolutely devastated:
