Getting on Beauty and the Geek -- local audition

A flyer was sent out to the engineers here at Duke, advertising for a local audition for the next season of Beauty and the Geek. A few of my friends and I, while nowhere near socially inept enough to authentically qualify for the show, figured we could make a pretty strong case for ourselves given how much we've done or worked on that would make us seem like complete nerds. For example, for an electical engineering design class, I made a reincarnation of pong using the original NES controllers with a random LCD and microcontroller.

Applicants have to make a 10 minute tape "BOTH telling us and showing us why you should be a contestant," so I'm wondering how I could approach this. I think I'd make a huge list of all of the things that I do, have done, or am interested in that are dorky, and figure out what things I could show on camera to really beef it up (e.g. showing my 3-monitor PC setup or stacks of nonfiction books). I'd just have to talk about all this techy stuff with a ton of dorky enthusiasm.

The full flyer text is below. Any/all ideas welcome, especially with regard to acting like a social outcast (or whatever you think they want to see on the show). If one of us actually goes through with the application process, there will definitely be a trip report.

"BEAUTY AND THE GEEK pairs gorgeous but academically impaired women with brilliant but socially challenged men to test intellect and social skills. This cycle will remain true to the series' format, pairing the women with the men for a chance to win a cash prize. For audition application and requirements, please visit http://www.cwtv.com/thecw/BATG-Season4Casting

We are once again looking for very smart guys 21-30 years old with a high IQ and a savvy intellect. If you are more likely to be featured on Jeopardy ratherthan The Bachelor then we NEED you. This opportunity could make you RICHER IN LIFE (AND EVEN LOVE).

Do you know a good guy (who may just be socially inept when it comes to the ladies) But, who deserves a GREAT break in life? Finally, a reality show where being smart PAYS OFF with a MAJOR cash prize! Are you sick and tired of those reality shows featuring the attractive man with not much substance? We’re turning the tables and showing America that smart guys have more to offer. If you can teach a beauty a thing or two then this could be your perfect opportunity! Remember, Last year’s winners won $250,000!!!!!!"

Discuss.

I dont think you wanna "over do it" w/ the dorkiness. Stay pretty legit, and maybe dress fairly dorky during ur addition (a dragon t shirt or something would help). Mention that you have had extreme girl problems, and have never truly been w/ a women (true or not). The pong thing is a big help.

I'm sure that enough people fake being dorky to try to get on this show that overdoing it is a sure way to get booted. But I'd have to take some steps to appear at least a little bit awkward (like you said). Claiming to be afraid of girls is mandatory. But I think that main idea would be to find as many possible examples of places where I've deviated from the norm in a dorky manner, and be excited about it.

Judging from past seasons, they seem to value social awkardness and being visually dorky over actually being smart (being a duke enginner with a high sat/gpa should more than fulfill the intelligence requirement). They're looking to make a show that will sell, so I'll have to come up with some hook that they think people will want to see. What that is though, I have no idea.

My friend was on this show. He was the kid that solved rubix cubes a lot. He was not really that much of an outcast or anything to begin with. I guess he looked kinda dorky with his glasses and his rubix cubing made for a nice gimmick.

If you have dorky glasses wear them. Don't comb your hair or cut it as they like to do makeovers. Maybe not even wash it. Wear really bad clothing. Tell them you are a "insert nerdy Warcraft title."
