Shooting at NYNY (edited title)

Apparantly, within the last hour there was a huge shooting at NYNY. I've heard various reports ranging from 10+ dead by a guy who walked in there with a machine gun and opened fire and is still on the loose and the strip is shut down, to 4 people shot but not dead by 2 gunmen who are captured.

Mod Edit - nobody actually died

Wow this is just terrible. Not good for the casino industry in the least. In all honesty though I am a little suprised this hasn't happened sooner.

Re: Massacre at NYNY

It has happened before, it will happen again. The example that comes to mind most readily was the aftermath of the Mike Tyson ear-biting incident at the MGM Grand in '97. In addition to the debacle of the fight itself, rival gangs got into a shooting match as the bout ended, which spilled out onto the casino floor, forcing a temporary shutdown of the casino (though not the hotel).

These things are usually hush-hushed very quickly by TPTB, for fear of the bad PR. I know about this one because I happened to be in town that weekend. Furthermore, this incident was referred to in passing in one of those books by Ben Mezrich about the MIT BJ teams.

5am LV news updates:

* 4 people were shot, no fatalities. 2 victims were injured lightly, 2 more seriously but non-life-threatening

* suspect in custody, no info on him

4 people were shot, taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. apparently a 50 year old guy just walked in and started shooting randomly, said on the news some marines tackled him before cops got there

This is getting reported on Fox News Channel.

Based on the short report, I think he was standing on the upper level which you get to from the bridges connecting MGM Grand and New York New York (or Excalibur and New York New York). Then, he fired down into the casino.

Honestly, I hate all the speculation that happens with any murder/rampage. I think the media hypes it up beyond sensibility like during the VT massacre where they reported Cho was using machine guns (handguns actually).

Just so you know, there is over 500k machine guns in the USA (a lot more silencers). These are available to most civilians in most states. Only 1 has been used in a crime and it was done by a bad cop.

You are much more likely to be killed by a simple revolver or beaten to death. Only 3% of murders happen with "assault-weapons" ... which usually means painted black with folding stock

I wonder what a horrible life it would be if one of my main foci were the defense of assault weapons.

Your first post here was excellent. I feel much better-informed now, and am actively considering purchasing an assault rifle for my nephew, based upon the fact that they are so safe.

Uhmmm...I just want to point out that this is incredibly incorrect. Machine guns have been used in a lot more than 1 crime. I have personal knowledge of at least 5 incidents in which fully automatic weapons were used in a crime. I imagine it's happened a few other times as well.

I am talking about legally owned ones. You need a class III weapon licence to purchase one (plus they are expensive as hell).

Everyone knows the MS-13 and other gangs have imported machineguns into CA and used them on cops.

That is correct. When you legally own one, you submit fingerprints to the FBI, just for starters.

Let the defeatist liberal weak tight arguments begin.
