Strange Ruling on EPT Dead Chip Pile

The tournament started off 10-handed, and the player four to my right was absent. When the blinds reached 100-200, and this guy had a fair number of chips yet to be blinded out, a tournament manager/director came over and starting removing his chips. I complained vocally, since the luck of the draw added dead money to our table, while meanwhile this poor gentleman could still show up and be a reasonable contender after a little gambling. He had, after all, ponied up 10k euros to play...

Only one other player spoke up about this, and we were ignored -- was my complaint unreasonable?

Unrelated note: I greatly enjoyed reading Adam's report of the tournament, and wish I managed to catch the 3 5 vs A J hand -- what a call!

i'd guess they didnt get the 10k from him. if he never checked in or anything, or even if they did get teh1 0k, but then never heard from him, they coulda pulled him out. I dont think thats non-standard. Didnt they do something like this for Jeff Williams when he overslept day1a at PCA? and they just moved him to day1b after blinding down a stack for him?

No. They do the same thing in the WSOP ME after some period of time. They will not let a full 10k stack blind off.

similar thing happened at my starting table at pca, some guy didnt show and his stack got blinded of for an hour or 2 and then tourney staff came and took it off the table

i thought it was weird but didnt say anything since it was my first live tourney and i thought it might be standard.

Hi Colin,

The same thing happened at my table too, and later I asked Thomas, the
TD, about this. He explained it to me as follows:

The chips are placed on the table and are blinded off whether or not a player
actually paid the 10,000 euro entry fee. This is done so that a place is reserved for any late comers who may choose to register. So if someone
walks in off the street without having pre-registered and wishes to play,
he can just pay his 10 grand and take that seat.

When the blinds reach 100 200, the late registration period ends and those
chips are removed. Thomas assured me that had those chips been bought
and paid for by a player who had registered but for some reason failed to
showup, then they would remain on the table and be blinded off throughout
the whole tournament.
