People who should be more famous than they are

Hopefully this will go better than "what celebrity do you hate"

I kind of remember doing this thread before so don't crucify me but I can't find it.

I'll start with someone who I think is becoming more famous lately, "the man who saved the world"

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov is a retired Russian Strategic Rocket Forces lieutenant colonel who, on September 26, 1983, deviated from standard Soviet doctrine by positively identifying a missile attack warning as a false alarm. This decision, according to several sources, was a major factor in preventing an accidental retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States. Investigation of the satellite warning system later confirmed that the system had been malfunctioning.

I'm sure there are a ton of people out there who have done awesome things, invented cool stuff, said stuff that stuck with you, etc etc. Please don't just name your favorite obscure musicians. Interesting stories!

Warren had many fans, but never got very famous. David Letterman devoted a whole show to Warren right before he died. I saw him live a few times and there were about 500 people there.

Good call on Warren Zevon. Best one I could think of. I even started a thread about this very topic last fall, asking why he isn't more well known.

He had two top 40 hits, a top ten album and two gold records. That's pretty freaking famous.

Why should he be famous? There are plenty of "favorite artists" out there. Read the OP more carefully.

How about Joseph Rochefort? He cracked the Japanese naval encryption prior to the Battle of Midway which enabled the US to win and destroy the Japanese carrier fleet. It was the turning event in the Pacific in WWII and likely saved the US an even longer war. If the Japanese capture Midway, they have access to Pearl and force the US back to San Fran, Oregon and San Diego as primary Naval bases. He was holed up in a bunker deep under Pearl and made him and his team churn through code until they found it. Once they did, they sent out dummy messages to confirm that they had figured it out and Nimitz planned a surprise counterattack on the Japanese.

Kurt Godel: He was one of the most important mathematician/logicians of the 20th century.

Not to mention that in his later years Einstein said that he only went to work at the Institute for Advanced Study so that he could walk home and talk to Godel. In my book, that's the highest praise you can get.

I think this probably fits into the OPs request

The Funk Brothers, not to many people have heard of them, but everyone has heard a song that they did the instrumentals in, they have played on more number one records than the beatles, elvis, rolling stones and teh beach boys combined.
