The Upcoming Upgrade

Is there anything that I (we) should know about ahead of time? Are names of forums changing? Will the same road be used to get to this forum? Should I just kick back and wait and see?

I hadn't yet checked that out. Thanks for the link. I'll play around on there and if I come up with any specific questions I'll address them there or hit you guys back.

Forum names not changing. Most significant if there's a new category, '2+2 Communities' containing bbv4life, oot, el d forum and the lounge. Otherwsie much the same wrt left-hand menu/forum ordering and naming.

Given all the discussion we had about the sidebar a whle back, I wish that the rest of us had some input into how this ended up.

Quite a few people had input. Ryan set the program for that.

See the archive for how it looks.

I will say that it is incredibly retarded to move bbv4lyfe away from BBV.

i am sure it makes 1 person happy that he could be in charge of reorganizing the sidebar, but it pisses everybody else off.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

Also, the sidebar links stay the same color after you click on them? Seems annoying. The forums I visit currently are always a different color, so it makes switching to forums I read easier.

Nick,

This wasn't the decision of just one person. Other people who favored this arrangement include myself, El Diablo, and MEbenhoe amidst other who tried out the test forum.

Nick

A number of people suggested 4life go in the community area, and IIRR, Gildwulf himself had the final decision.

PJ
that'll be turned off at go live. Way too many posters to make that viable, though I guess we might work out how to make it forum-specific if I or another developer get some time, and it's felt worthwhile.

Bad call guys.

And yeah, moving 4L away from BBV is silly.

No problem.

The answer is that Chuck and I wanted to keep the test group small. There are a number of reasons for this, but the most important one for me was that too many voices pulling everything in too many directions would have slowed us down quite a bit.

I feel the group we used gave us a good perspective on what most mods and other members opinions would be.

The BBV4Life move was the most difficult forum reorganization decision to make. The opinions were all split pretty evenly, and originally I was very against the idea of moving it away from BBV. But El Diablo and others eventually convinced me that it would be worth a try, and I agree that it could work very well.

If it doesn't, we can always move it back.

This decision was mine. So if people are interested in pointing fingers at someone later on, they shouldn't blame gildwulf.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

Ryan,

Given that there was already an open thread with a lot of suggestions about re-organizing the sidebar, why did you guys bother to re-create that discussion.

One of the things I like about being a mod is that it gives me input on stuff like this. If we're going to have long threads where we share our ideas only to have them ignored, that's just really lame.

Agreed. Also, why is bbv4l a community, but mtt community is is the strategy area?

You're assuming your opinions from that thread were ignored. That's just not true. I based the initial ordering off that, and we went from there. One of the reasons Mat left me in charge of the forum reorganization is because of my opinions from that thread and thoughts I shared with him privately around the same time.

We didn't start over with a new discussion. We just continued from where we left off in that thread.

Because it doesn't fit with the OT community forums.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

I think the reorganization looks totally fine. And the fact that anything can easily be moved around makes this pretty much a non-issue.

I will point out though, that it's pretty funny that Other Other Topics is not under the Other Topics heading.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

I'm not upset at the results, I'm upset at the process.

While I was aware that diebitter and others were helping with the technical side behind the scenes, I was not aware at all that there were other mods involved in non-technical aspects of the design. I'm surprised that this wasn't shared, or that others weren't given an opportunity to add some input.

Again, a big part of the reason that I do this reasonably thankless job is that I really enjoy being able to provide some input here, to help the forums out overall, to help other mods. When a functionally clandestine group is formed to talk about something as huge as a total overall of the forums, I think that's pretty lame.

Dids - too many cooks. A few people were asked to provide minor input, and this avoided too many cooks syndrome - keeping things moving along at a brisk pace for Chuck. No worries, the forum is fluid and can still be changed for the better after its installed and being used by everyone - there is still time for feedback and all of our vital input.

Dids 04-02-2007 06:39 PM

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

Too many cooks is a horrible answer.

Get a lot of input, use a good filter. Given that the mod forum realistically has ~20ish mods who are active, nobody is going to be overwhelmed in terms of suggestions.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

I'm not usually one to get in on situations like this so forgive me if this seems a little out of left field...

A few people are making a big deal out of "not being involved" in the new upgrade. From the perspective of good/bad for the forum you all make a valid point. The more feedback and input the new forum has the better it could be. This is true. However, I could name a bunch of things in rebuttal but I think two will be fine.

1) It's already done. There's no use debating it now.

2) The website doesn't belong to us. We just volunteer. Whatever decisions are made by Mason, Mat, Ryan, and Chuck are it. We have no right to anything. I love that they do include us on things, acknowledge our efforts, work with us on things, respect our opinions, and such. But we're not entitled to anything.

That fits in with the whole communities category discussion.

Rather than repeat a lot of what's already been discussed, I invite any interested mods to sign up for the sandbox and read the other threads. I'll approve the registration if you use a similar name and the e-mail address used on this forum. Now that we're basically done with the preparation I don't see a problem with everyone here being able to look things over.

The mod forum is in the Two Plus Two category as well.

The idea to move AtF and group it with those forums came about in the mod forum thread Dids was talking about. AtF isn't being moved up top with those forums because of its current traffic. That's just where it fits best, and it's more visible for everyone that way.

Part of the problem we've had is that certain forums almost get buried/lost in the current layout. Any decisions that have been made ultimately come back to maximizing visibility and keeping the forum order easy to follow.

Re: The Upcoming Upgrade

I'm curious as to whether most members know this is happening in two days' time.

The message above, in this forum, ("The forums will be closed for a major upgrade beginning early Saturday morning April 7 (approximately 2:45am ET). Expect the forums to be down for most of the day."), isn't showing in the Zoo or ATF. (I'm not sure if it was and has been removed.)

I put a post in the Zoo about it a few minutes ago, and linked it to Chuck's post in ATF. When I posted it, there had been only 318 Views of Chuck's post. Almost as many people that have read my post have since read Chuck's. I suppose this could be a natural reaction when a link is given, but it made me wonder if it was news to a number of these readers.

Perhaps other mods might consider posting in their forums along the same lines, if they haven't already?

i like it. it seems to be more manageable perceptually.

i will admit that if it was possible, a forum shoutbox would be pretty freaking awesome. of course this is coming from someone that is completely ignorant about programming code and all this web creation crap. i'm sure(as was previously alluded to)that it's just too dificult to facilitate due to resources or whatever.
