What are thermogenics?

Wiki on thermogenics

Thermogenics are compounds that raise your heart rate and help you burn fat. The most popular one is caffeine. Thermogenics typically make you feel more alert, possibly jittery, and often can curb your appetite.

Are thermogenics safe?

It depends. Most of them are safe if used correctly and in the proper dosages, but abuse and ignorance of their effects can lead to severe problems and even death (Ephedra was banned because an idiotic minor league pitcher drank no water and pitched in the extreme heat while taking ephedra).

Are thermogenics effective?

Yes, very much actually. By taking a thermogenic and getting a good cardio workout 3-5 days a week for 20 minutes each session, you will start to see fat loss as long as your diet is moderately in check.

Do you have any recommendations?

The ECA Stack (Ephedrine, Caffeine, Aspirin) is pretty good, but Ephedrine is no longer legal to buy without a prescription. Ephedra-free products like Biotest's Hot-Rox Extreme get good reviews, but I have no experience with them. My recommendation would be to go with a Biotest product, however, as their quality control standards are very high and their prices are very reasonable.

Good advice. I've taken hot-rox and spike, both with acceptable results. The only thing I'd add is that thermogenics become less effective with use, so you may need to gradually increase dosage to get the same effects.

I always hated the way thermogenics with caffeine made me feel...You can feel ur heart startin to race and i dont like that feeling very much...if theres a solid suppliment out there without caffeine that would be worthwhile

Yup, not true. From Wikipedia...

Legality in USA
Ephedrine itself has never been illegal in the United States. In 1997, the FDA proposed a regulation on ephedra (the herb from which ephedrine is obtained), which limited an ephedra dose to 8 mg with no more than 24 mg per day.[1] This proposed rule was withdrawn in part in 2000 because of "concerns regarding the agency's basis for proposing a certain dietary ingredient level and a duration of use limit for these products."[2] In 2004, the FDA created a ban on ephedrine alkaloids that are marketed for reasons other than asthma, colds, allergies, other disease, or traditional Asian use.[3] On April 14, 2005, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah ruled that the FDA did not have proper evidence that low dosages of ephedrine alkaloids are actually unsafe,[4] but on August 17, 2006, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in Denver upheld the FDA's final rule declaring all dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids adulterated, and therefore illegal for marketing in the United States.[5] Ephedrine is, however, still legal in many applications outside of dietary supplements. However, purchasing is currently limited and monitored, with specifics varying from state to state. Although the FDA claims that their ruling is a response to several deaths suffered by people taking large doses, some believe that it is only because ephedrine is one of the key ingredients for creating methamphetamine that the FDA limits the total quantity one may purchase.[citation needed]

The House passed the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 as an amendment to the renewal of the Patriot Act. Signed into law by president George W. Bush on March 6, 2006, the act amended the US Code (21 USC 830) concerning the sale of ephedrine-containing products. The federal statute included the following requirements for merchants who sell these products:

A retrievable record of all purchases identifying the name and address of each party to be kept for two years.
Required verification of proof of identity of all purchasers
Required protection and disclosure methods in the collection of personal information
Reports to the Attorney General of any suspicious payments or disappearances of the regulated products
Non-liquid dose form of regulated product may only be sold in unit dose blister packs
Regulated products are to be sold behind the counter or in a locked cabinet in such a way as to restrict access
Daily sales of regulated products not to exceed 3.6 grams without regard to the number of transactions
Monthly sales not to exceed 9 grams of pseudoephedrine base in regulated products
The law gives similar regulations to mail-order purchases, except the monthly sales limit is only 7.5 grams.

Hmm, interesting. At any rate, it's difficult to find at your local store in pure form as Ephedrine (Vasopro is the leading brand name for it).

Is adderall a type of thermogenic?

kyleb 08-14-2007 11:44 PM

Re: What are thermogenics?

It's not specifically one, but it does suppress appetite and increase CNS activity.

onlinebeginner 08-14-2007 11:52 PM

Re: What are thermogenics?

To clarify (I know very little about this stuff):

Aderall will not only curb your appetite (i knew this already) but you will burn more calories jus by taking it?

Does the A in the ECA stack matter? I was under the impression the overwhelming general opinion is that just the EC is enough now.

Bolt Ephedrine HCL > Vasopro and most others b/c of purity and it's lack of 200mg of Guaifenesin

Suzzer - for the most part the research has said that A isnt all that necessary.

onlinebeginner,

why don't you just stop "doing nothing" ?????

wanna know what burns more calories that "doing nothing"?? DOING ANYTHING, so go do something...

I question the writer's knowledge about the general market outside of Biotex and his knowledge of quality control standards. Sounds like simple repeated marketing speak of someone who read a t-nation article.

Re: What are thermogenics?

I take ephedrine and have for years. You can order it online at mega-pro.com. It is still legal to buy it in the U.S., but there's some ruse about it having to be for asthma and not for weight loss. You also have to fax in some info about yourself and I think there are some states you can't ship it to.

Ephedrine is a superb appetite suppressant and energy booster. I take it 3x a day 25mg, with 200 mg caffeine.

I tried Hot-Rox Xtreme and it did not cut my appetite one bit.

Re: What are thermogenics?

From wiki:

"Adderall has also been used as an off-label drug for weight loss. Adderall’s side effect of weight loss and appetite suppression is a desired result for those trying to lose weight. There have not been any scientific studies performed to evaluate the effectiveness of this form of treatment and is viewed as a very risky and potentially dangerous way to shed pounds"

I have a hard time finding normal Primatine Mist tabs without added expectorants. Currently I use Ergopharm's AMP anyway.
