Let's work with a deck of 9 cards: denominations J, Q, and K, and suits Hearts, Diamonds, Spades. A hand of 3 cards is dealt at random. What is the probability that the hand contains 2 cards from one denomination and 1 card from another? |
Re: homework help anyone? :)
3C(3,2)x2x3/C(9,3) = 54/84 = 9/14

Re: homework help anyone? :)
There are 3c2 ways to select the denomination .
For each denomination there are 3c2 ways to select a pair and 3c1 ways to select a card from the other denomination . So 3c2*[3c2*3c1 + 3c1*3c2] = 54 . The probability is 54/9c3 = 9/14 |
