1/2 NL (6max) dealing with the maniac

I have the best seat in the house, right of the player who's 84/80/1.5.

He open raises every hand to 6x the bb or $12. He continuation bets a lot of the time, but not always. He does raise, check-fold a fair bit.

This seems like it should be obvious, but I didn't end up doing well against him. How should I go about extracting the most money?

How often should I cold-call? How often should I 3-bet preflop? What's a decent 3-bet range vs LAG?

He seems to be a decent player post-flop.

I dont really know the answer but I'll take a shot anyway:

I have some background knowledge in this hand and know the crazy maniac is sitting with a gigantic stack (like $1400 right?).

IMO, you should play a very high variance style when you're sitting with $200 to try to double up. Reraise preflop with pocket pairs, two broadway cards, maybe aces down to A8. Take some gambles to try to grow you're stack. Once you get up to $400 it's probably better to slow down a bit and wait for a hand of some sort and then see if you can get him to hang himself to double you up.

by best do you mean worst or by right do you mean left?

Assuming you have position on him 3-bet him or cold-call him a lot with weak hands as he seems to back down to some level aggression. Also cold-call sometimes with your big hands in an attempt to trap him.

3-betting a lot is very expensive as he's raising 6x each hand. I guess, 3-bet a lot and be willing to gamble with him while you're at 1 buyin...

ya you can either 3-bet a lot or float and take it away on the flop up to you.

well the easy answer would be play tight(er) and re-raise your premium hands.. easy to play.. i wouldnt really waste my time with marginal hands if you think that he plays better than you post flop..

try to get him pretty commited pf so that you can get the money in on the rest of the streets easily even if its just by calling..

if hes THAT aggressive and you hit the flop he will quickly double you up..
