Serious now:
If you look at the counts, there are a boat load of readers. If you look at all the strat forums or other forums, you will often see a tl;dr at the end of many titles, or if a thread is long, someone will post tl;dr, meaning, "wow, that was long. That shows the impact that this forum has had on this site. You never see OOT or EDF used this way. The reason I come here is because it has the largest ratio of good posts to good posters of all the general forums. The question is not, "why aren't there more visitors?" but "why aren't there more posts?"

This forum has grown slowly, and I doubt that there is anything we will be able to do to speed up the process. When people are comfortable posting here, they will post.

Shout out to someone who made exactly one post on this forum. I know that he prefers to read other's thoughts, not post his own. I am not sure why he doesn't post, but I think that is the general feel of this. We are all being read. He has said it is one of the most interesting places on the web, I guess he doesn't want to change a good thing. Maybe that is why many poster prefer to lurk here.

The "tl;dr" thing was begotten from a great gimmick account, not the Lounge. The Lounge's acronym was chosen to fit the meme, the name didn't spawn the meme.

I like a lot of DaveT's ideas. Dave, I wish you would start more threads. In fact, try to start 1 every other day, ok?

Today I felt like discussing 3 different topics - global warming, how to become the perfect mate, and dealing with an awkward coworker situation. I will probably not start any of these threads, though, due to the fact that I am so depressed I wouldn't mind if a truck ran over my head at this time. I don't know, are these even of interest to anyone? I'm not sure I know what loungers want to discuss anymore (other than what makes a hot actress really hot). Personally I miss the DVD club. Let's face it, all 3 of the forums welcome the same topics and would like to have rich discussion. For me the main thing I see as being different is that the lounge opens its arms to reviews (old and new film reviews, book reviews, beer reviews etc.) encourages new posters to start threads, allows experimental and bloggy type posts, even allows short fiction pieces, and discourages personal attacks against other posters. Anyone can start a post at any time. You don't have to feel weird starting a thread. At least I hope we don't make you feel weird [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] In general we try to be laid back and tolerant.

Another difference is that we have opened it up to some game and contest threads which I feel are a fun community builder. I would like to do more weekend games so if anyone has a good idea please share it in the chat thread.


Tolerant, artsy and diverse but not too stupid. We're like the Amsterdam of the forums.

I have little exposure to GW, would definitely be interested in topic 2...though I think more as an observer with questions for all you wiser and more experienced posters, and would be interested in topic 3 as well.

I miss the DVD club, too. However, I've vowed to avoid any such thing until I make my posts in the Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset one.... (WHICH SHOULD COME TONIGHT OR TOMORROW DANGIT).

Katie, you should take your own advice. You always worry so much about whether a thread you create will be perfect or run into any opposition. Every thread or post will be not right for at least some people, no matter what it's like or how good it is. There's no way to be perfect enough to please everybody, and sweating the attempt is kinda nuts -- not least because some people suck, are merely spiteful, or have terrible taste, and it's actually pleasing them that should alarm you! Heck, even if you were perfect, some people would hate you just for that! So don't hamstring yourself with doubt so much, or you'll give up all your potential. Be brave! An idea without detractors often has little to recommend it or is too obvious to be worth stating.

Here's how I see the breakdown:

The Lounge: Relaxed and polite discussion. A haven for like minded people who want to discuss arts, entertainment, the good life, good food, photography, current news and other items of interest.

EDF: Interesting and in depth discussion on topics ranging from travel to investing. Quality contributions are expected.
