5DC hand for review

Folded to the SB, a weak player who loves playing shorts and all sorts of terrible draws, who limps. I'm in the BB with pure trash and draw 5. SB draws three and bets out.

I've got a pair of aces. Your line ... call, fold or raise?

Call.

Call if he's your typical draw player. Lots of low limit players have the "omg he has nothing since he drew 5, so therefore I bet" syndrome.
If he's pretty weak after the draw, I can find a fold.

And I want to keep suckers from thinking that just because I'm drawing 5, they can steal from me with impugnity.

So I raised. The SB called ... and I still won.

Is sending a "Don't mess with me" message here appropriate if I believe my read is right? I'd love to continue to be able to get free showdowns with marginal hands in these showdowns in the blinds, especially since it's with no great frequency that I'll improve enough to be able to bet out.

Not too dissimilar situation... You are in the BB drawing 5 (or even 4) after one of these feebs you describe completes and draws 1.

What kind of hand would you need to call a bet? I've been calling with AKxxx and that's been working out for me, and the psychological effect when you win in that situation is a benefit as well. Anybody got advice for this situation?

Pretty standard call here. If you raise here, you are just
doing it for psychological reasons but I think it will just
educate the small blind into NOT betting into your four or
five card draws in the future whereas you MAY want to have
this player continue to bet weak hands into you. Sure, it
turned out you won an extra big bet on this particular hand,
but will this opponent and other opponents now stop making
plays at you in the future?

If you make at least as big as the minimum pair the small
blind would have open raised with (instead of call with),
you have to call a player capable of bluffing in this spot
after you have drawn four or five cards, so against most
opponents, you can make a crying call with 88 or 99.
