Response to El D\'s request for online user count by forum

I am posting the data here as comma delimited data that can be cut and pasted into a file and saved in CSV format.

Since this will make for long lines and a sloppy format, on the forum, I think it belongs in a separate post.

Others can use this for posting their results. Graphs and analysis that can be posted in original thread.

Stevie, there appears to be problems with the data... can you confirm that you are handling the case where there are "no viewers" of a forum (and thus no label) properly...

Other than that, good work so far.

ps... what time zone?

The sponsored rakeback forums are showing values of zero and have the appropriate number of entries, so this appears to be working.

Tip to anyone importing this: take the commas out of forum names to get everything to line up correctly. Otherwise, SMP, BFI, and others may get messed up.

so what am i looking at exactly? am i really to believe that the lounge ever had 123 viewers? or that bbv4l ever had only 1 viewer? i don't.

i must not know what the data means.

While the individual data points aren't all accurate, here's what the totals look like...

Worth noting, the data is higher than that reported by big-boards, which is polling data from every page load...

Time zone EDT, sorry about that.

Yes, I noticed the 200 peak in Software and thought that odd, too but did not make the connection to a shift in numbers.

We'll do better next week, and I may even be able to clean up this dataset at the end of the day.

KotOD: "Well, there goes El D's theory." Huh?

Stevie: Thanks! Tickner is currently compiling a longer timeframe sample, will be interesting to compare these multiple datapoints.

I think it would be interesting to see a graph showing how many people were viewing strat. vs. non-strat forums at given times.

[/ QUOTE ]
I thought the strat forums were represented by that black line with the ticks every 5 hours.

Kot,

Apparently you are not aware that to find out information about viewers in any single forum, all I or anyone else has to do is LOOK AT THE MAIN INDEX PAGE!

a question about the data:

if a user has tabs open with threads from multiple forums, how would what he is 'viewing' be calculated?

Sniper believes that a user is counted as viewing a forum if he has opened a thread there within the last 15 minutes. So as long as each tab keeps getting refreshed, each counts as a separate user.

ed, the answer to this is not clear, it could be...

1. multi counting them, which might account for the difference with big-boards numbers.

2. only counting the last user action.

This could lead to things like Dids constantly refreshing BBV in order to pump up their numbers:

I think I screwed that up. My post above only applies if you're using different accounts. A user can be counted as viewing more than one forum, but each account can only be counted as viewing any particular forum once.

Iron, worth noting that even if the first sentence is true (and you would think looking at the thread list would also count, right?), does not make your 2nd sentence true.

This isnt something we would have to really worry about. Its a rare case, if ever.
