Viruses won\'t go away

I've been using AVG free edition for a few years with no problems. However, over the last month or so I am constantly getting messages that I have a virus.

They 'heal' OK, but I just have to heal a virus every couple of minutes.

I run updates and C: drive sweep every day and AVG picks up around 40 viruses every day (and deletes/cleans them). After the daily virus check, AVG just keeps picking up more. While nothing malicious seems to have happened (yet) running online accounts & banking from my laptop is worrying.

I have XP sp2 fwiw. While typing this, 5 virus messages popped up and I healed them.

The most recent cretin that won't go away despite being "deleted" 100+ times EVERY DAY: -

Trojan Horse Downloader Generic 8.NDA

Sorry for being a noob and thanks for any help.

EDIT: It's appeared 8 times while posting

Have some other software verify your computer. For spyware/adware I recommend Hitman Pro. Hitman pro is basically a shell that runs various other programs. Quite effective. Until recently I was a fan of f-prot antivirus, though the free version is DOS based. Do searches @ google with the specific viruses you find, frequently specific solutions for that variant exist.

You need to boot to safe Mode and run AVG from there.

* If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
* Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
* When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

Definitely try running AVG from Safe Mode. Also might want to download SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware. Both of these are free programs. Both should be updated and ran in Safe Mode for best results.

why do you need to turn off the power and wait 30sec? You can do it from a restart.

sorry, copy-pasted the safe mode instructions from a web site since I was lazy. I agree, doing a cold boot probably doesn't matter

If you have Internet Speed Virus, then you must go to Uninstall Programs and uninstall it.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll try those tonight.

Additionally, my Windows is in Korean and so navigating unfamiliar menus and options in a difficult language is tricky.

Is it possible the virii are in your System Restore? Try disabling it and see what happens.

I recommend Spybot for removing reoccuring pests. Check the Startup tool in Advanced Tools to see what gets run when you boot.
