General life questions / observations / random whatever thread

Have a random question about something? Sweet web link? Random quick anecdote to share? Looking for some general advice/feedback on a situation?

Here's the place.

The Boardroom

Do this look like a cool franchise?

Would any of you use such a place?

JB,

I dunno, but apparently others have similar ideas:

http://www.mrthebarbershop.com/index_flash.html

If I worked in that neighborhood, I'd maybe shell out for the $65/mo package.

Men's skin care sales have been growing at about 15-20% a year for the last few years so there is certainly a market for this type of place.

I currently order my skin care products online and go to normal salon for the rest. If there was a male-centric salon I'd use it. I use to go to something similar but they went out of business.

I assume you are asking because you are interested in owning a franchise. The one issue I have is that the products seem to be limited to very specific brands. They are good brands but I'd prefer to have more options. I am also not sure if you'd really gain much from owning a franchise over just opening your own independent salon based on the same concept.

I believe that in life you should always be doing one of two things:
- enjoying yourself
- accomplishing something

If you're doing neither, do something else. If you're doing both, so much the better.

Is Delmonico's still as good as everyone says in the B&M thread? Any new restaurants I should try while in Vegas?

James,

I go to the American Male Salon in Mountain View, CA. It looks like the same thing, you get free drinks (no alcohol anymore, thank you government and liquor license laws) and hand wax, facial, etc.

I pay between 50 and 60, and don't think it's worth it. Yet I still go, and they are ALWAYS full, I can hardly ever get in same-day.

If there aren't any close to you, I say go for it!

lippy,

It's pretty damn good. Nine at the Palms was also great. Delmonico Steakhouse is maybe a little more on the traditional, fancy dining side, whereas Nine is maybe a little bit more modern, hip feel. I dunno, I love them both, they each have a different vibe to them but both are great.

I was wondering if something like this story would make for an interesting thread...at any rate, this is my favorite story of a culture clash. I promise it's worth reading.

My mother had a university professor that was born in India and taught there, but spoke fluent english. By her account he was absolutely brilliant, one of the smartest men she had ever met.

Some years after university, (she had stayed in contact with him) he came to visit her in New Jersey. She didn't know how to entertain this guy, and finally decided on taking him out to tea; figuring this would be familiar to him and allow them time to talk over old times.

He orders the type of tea that he wants and they bring him a cup of hot water and a tea bag. He looks at the teabag a little curiously, and then cuts it open with his knife and empties the contents into the cup. My mom then explains how a tea bag is supposed to work by demonstrating with her own. She asks the waitress for a new cup and a new tea bag.

The professor is a little embarrassed by his error, but nevertheless impressed with the idea of a tea bag. He gets his new cup and his new tea bag and, with great satisfaction, successfully makes his first cup of tea.

He then grabs a bag of sugar off the table, and throws the entire thing unopened into his mug...
