Showing cards while hand is live

This occurred in a home game, but the question arose as to what the ruling would be in a casino, so here we are.

It gets to heads-up on the river. Player A bets, and Player B contemplates a call. He flips his cards over but does not say anything. To make things more confusing, he flips them with a little gusto and somewhat away from him - in the direction of the muck, but not close enough to touch. Maybe they've moved about 12" farther away than where they were face down in front of him.

We agreed this would not be allowed in the World Series of Poker for example. But in a regular casino setting, I'm thinking it would.

It is not a matter of casino versus home game, but cash game versus tournament.

It also varies from room to room. But as a general rule opening your hand HU in a cash is fine. Opening your hand in a tournament HU is a no no.

Absolutely not. Not that I object to showing your cards in a cash game heads up, I object to doing so in a manner like this designed to lead your opponent to believe that you have acted. Unfortunately what happens next is the opponent thought that you were folding face up or calling and now flips up his hand, then you after seeing his hand decide how you want to act.

If you are going to show your cards HEADS UP IN A CASH GAME do so in a manner that clealry does not look like you are folding or calling.

Better yet, don't be one of those guys and just don't do it. Call or fold, and let's move on to the next hand.

I wish Doyle had never written that part.

I'm not asking what you think should happen or what you think the rule should be, I'm asking what the generally accepted rule IS.

It's allowed heads up in a cash game and in a tournament which is down to two players.

I don't know for sure but I'm willing to bet that it's not allowed in Europe.

Personally, I don't like it for lower limits because I think it can lead to serious angleshooting against a novice player who thinks he was called.

I allow it my home game because if you can't handle angleshooting, then you shouldn't be at my home game.

For tournaments from the TDA rule book. Rule #31

Exposing Cards- A player who exposes his cards with action pending may incur a penalty, but will not have a dead hand. The penalty will begin at the end of the
hand

Different rules for different houses. The house rule at the room I play in allows you to expose your cards HU in a tourney as well as a cash game. But, of course, the more popular ruling in most rooms would be as stated; ok in cash game, not in tourney.

There probably should be a more universal rule on this, especially clarifying on the forward tossing of the cards when flipping them face up...That makes it a little iffy, almost like a muck.

Robert's Rules SECTION 15 - TOURNAMENTS

22. Showing cards from a live hand during the action injures the rights of other players still competing in an event, who wish to see contestants eliminated. A player in a multihanded pot may not show any cards during a deal. Heads-up, a player may not show any cards unless the event has only two remaining players , or is winner-take-all. If a player deliberately shows a card, the player may be penalized (but his hand will not be ruled dead). Verbally stating one's hand during the play may be penalized.
