I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
 

Currently I pretty much tip $1/hand unless the dealer has done something that down to display a horrible attitude or sense of entitlement. Obviously I skip blind steals whatever. Anyway, I play mostly at the Wynn and I'm thinking of identifying maybe 4-5 dealers who are condescending or obnoxious or generally discourteous and stiffing them all the time. Consequently I'll pick 4-5 dealers I think are very good and tip them $2/hand.

I end up tipping the same amount but a more meritocratic matter as opposed to the current socialistic system.

Please comment, and when you do please identify for yourself as a dealer or a player.

playah - I recommend discussing your concerns with AJ or any other manager you feel comfortable with. Let them know your intentions, they might be able to provide you with some good insight that may or may not sway your decision. I wouldn't be shocked if they support your decision if they agree there is a problem, the Wynn management crew is very astute but cannot always take action themselves.

I am a Player. Unfortunately I play at Foxwoods where they pool their tips so that type of action would be completely meaningless. I generally tip more than $1 when there is a huge pot (like >$250).

I haven't really run into any nasty dealers, or even dealers with a sense of entitlement. But there was one dealer who was so slow and incompetent that I would have withheld tips from her if it wasn't Foxwoods - just to discourage her from being a dealer.

And I like your idea of rewarding dealers who are amazing/fun to be around. I would do this (and have done this at Commerce) even if you can't find dealers with really bad attitudes to compensate.

I'm a dealer and a player.

I view tipping as meritocratic in the first place, so I support you. I feel you should let the dealers getting stiffed know that you find their behavior inappropriate (maybe a small, polite comment when you feel they're out of line, nothing confrontational). But I wouldn't stiff every time. Tip the first pot, stiff the second (and maybe third), tip a little again, etc. I feel there's a tacit agreement when you enter a casino that the dealers are provided as a service and it is understood they are paid by the players, so a little bit is good form on your end (unless the dealer was also making procedural errors). Also, I'm more likely to take seriously someone who seems like he wants to tip but is holding back. Also also, I'm a dealin' rockstar, so I'd be getting $2 a pot from you, at least. Maybe I'm used to the feel-good warm fuzzies of other forums here, but what's with this sort of attitude I see a lot? Are we trying to out-cool each other? WTF? This isn't the usual "THESE ARE MY VIEWS ON TIPPING NONE OTHER ARE VALID RAAHHHRR" thread, it's somebody attempting a calm, rational discussion, looking for feedback on his thought process.

We don't need the forum's approval on the way we play hands, either, yet for some reason a lot of us keep asking about it. Should we stop because we're supposed to be big boys and girls and think for ourselves?

Yes, that's the way things currently are, but I think it sucks to be complacent about this. The casino should pay the dealers a better wage. It's not like they can't afford it.

OP,

I think tipping 2 x your normal tip to excellent dealers is nice, but not necessary. If you thought they deserves 1 x before, then nothing has changed. How bad are these dealers that you are considering stiffing? I can currently only think of one dealer who I consistently stiff.

Snow - keep your opinions about tipping culture to yourself, thats the #1 reason why tipping threads used to be auto-locked around here. if this thread becomes a soap box it will get locked as well. This isnt the politics forum, we dont give as much leeway [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

pfapfap - you weren't a member back when tipping threads were barred, we decided to allow them again recently provided they were about legitimate questions, and not used as a soap box. The general attitude in this forum has always been, and will continue to be that nobody needs forum approval; you can and should decide how to tip on your own. of course if someone has a question to ask about their personal tipping policy such as Goofballs it will be allowed, but you should naturally expect the answers that you railed against since thats always been our POV.
