How much of Poker is luck?

For example a world class player is playing against an 'average' player, what is the maximum %age rake he could beat. Personally I don't think the luck factor is high, over 90% so it would be impossible to beat a 10% rake?

How much poker you play will determine how much luck is involved.

Back in the day, and I stress that this was before online poker, we did a study on this. The result of that study determined that poker was 27% luck and the rest was skill.

But with the onset of online poker and the coming of age of the donkey in 2005, I would assume that number is slightly higher today.

The institute for psychology in gambling did a study in 1983 and determined that success in poker is based on the following weightings:

31%: the hands you are dealt

12%: your aggression at the table

8%: your highest level of education

17%: the environment you were raised in

6%: your exercise regimen

14%: your average daily intake of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

7%: geographic distance to closest server hub

12%: symmetry of facial features

41%: luck

Every hand you play your luck factor decreases. It never reaches 0, but continually approaches it.

I used to hate when people would tell me this... even though I knew it's mathematically true, I was just so pissed off that it didn't seem true for me. For something like 4-5 months, whenever I was in a large pot (2+ buyins in the middle) I won about 25% of the time despite being over a 75% favorite on average (yes I did the math). When I moved up in stakes it got even worse, and I eventually quit because of it.

Came back a while later, and now it's almost the opposite. If I feel like playing a smaller game, or anytime I'm up against a shortstacker, I'll lose to 3-outers all day long. But in big pots now I'm winning coinflip after coinflip, hitting 5 card straights on the board against AA... it's awesome when luck is not only failing to screw you over, but it's actually favoring you.

To answer the OP's question: Depends on how skilled your opponents are. If you're both good, luck is a huge factor. If you're both bad, luck is huge. If there's a real difference in skill then luck matters a whole lot less.

Also I've noticed the players who complain of the worst luck, are the ones who are good at poker but terrible with bankroll management. They put themselves into situations where their bad luck always costs the maximum amount of money.
