Where to go for Vacation? July 2-6

OK, so we (gf and I) just found out she will have the week of July 2nd off. I haven't used any of my 2 weeks vacation yet this year, and if we don't go anywhere in July, we won't be able to vacation until Thanksgiving.

So...basically I'm looking for "last minute" vacation deals. And because we didn't know we'd have this week off, we haven't really planned anything...BUT...we have some ideas.

For reference we live in Houston.

Vegas...yeah, no explanation necessary. Pro = it's Vegas.
Con + the whole "been there/done that" thing.

Chicago...I've been there a few times and I told her it's a world class city that we need to go to together some day. Weather-wise, Chicago in July would be a huge upgrade over Houston. The Con is that I don't really know the city well enough for last-minute planning.

San Francisco...I've never been, but think it would be a great place to visit during this time of year. I love cool, windy weather (she hates it) and I'm sure there is plenty to do there. She's been to SoCal once; I've never been to California.

Boston...another great city that I've never been near. There are several things I would enjoy about Boston...the history, the old architecture, and a road trip to Cape Cod (I'm assuming). Neither of us has been there. One of the con's is that I think, like Chicago, it would be tough to plan a comprehensive trip to Boston on short notice, and I don't know if 5-7 days is enough to get to know the city.

St. Louis...my place of birth, and I've always wanted to go back home and show her around. She's never been. Pros are that I have family there, and it is cheaper than the other cities listed. Also, I know how to navigate the place and so it would be "easy" to do.

Please list reasons why I should or shouldn't visit the 5 cities listed. Gambling is a plus. I don't really know much (in terms of teh gambool) about these cities, but I know San Jose has a Casino (right?...but it's a good trek from SF) and St. Louis has riverboat gambling.

Thanks!!! Oh, also, if anyone knows where I can find the best last-minute deals for airfare for 2 and hotel (and if possible, rental car), let me know!

There's been some threads on visiting Boston and seems like the perfect city to spend the 4th.

There is an epic thread on San Fran in El D's forum.

Don't be intimidated by Boston due to the close date, there is so much too see, but the public transportation is great and easy. I think if I were you, and I were to do Boston, I'd spend a couple days in the city, then rent a car, and head to Cape Cod for a day or two on the beach.

I think you could plan an awesome trip to Boston in a few hours.

The Red Sox are at home 2,3,4,5 if you are interested in Baseball and easy enough to get some tickets at the stadium.

You can go on a whale watch or deep sea fishing, check out the aquarium, the awesome bars and museums, Harvard Square, etc.

Head East!

I live in Boston so if you have any questions, feel free to PM.

chicago is fun, even if you dont know the city super well, as long as you stay downtown, and at a good hotel, you can get enough aweseom reccomendations to fill up a weekend. Im sure the beach and stuff will be busy. there isnt much in the way of gambling

st louis during 4th of july is lame as hell unless you have friends throwing house parties w/ fireworks and BBQ, as the whole downtown thing is too crowded and hot.

I should clarify that the trip isn't really centering around the 4th, it just so happens that this is our only common week off for a while. But I suppose the 4th would factor into it.

Noah, yeah that is probably what I'd do in Boston...spend half the time in the city, then go out to Cape Cod and stay in some B&B for a couple days or something. But is 5-7 days really enough time to "do" Boston?

Kayak.com....will check it out!

Stay out of DC please, we get enough tourists here for independence day.

BTW, if you do vegas, there is a SSNL gathering there of about 10-15 people.

Chicago is really fun and it wouldn't be hard to come up with good suggestions. There are about 3 'chicago threads' posted in OOT recently.

If I do Vegas, I'd definitely get together with 2p2ers for some SSNL action. Where at?
