Update on SSNL

Half the book is ready for submission. That's 43K words. We're holding back because we want to read the whole thing through to make sure there are no ordering errors.

Another 30K words are very close to done.

We've got the last four chapters to finish. Those are Small Cards (inlcuding Small Suited Aces), a little special one we aren't telling about yet, summary of Prelop-to-Flop Play, and volume 1's wrap-up, Planning Your Hand.

Final book length for volume 1 will be slightly longer than NLHET&P (which was 80K words) unless Mason wants a rewrite. We cut a few chapters and deferred some things to volume 2 so it wouldn't get ridiculous.

We are hyphenating "no-limit" if Mason agrees. Some people aren't gonna like that. Tough.

This book will not be called Small Stakes No-Limit. The title is not finalized.

We did not write this for any particular opponents or stakes. You cannot understand or play no-limit well without adjusting to how your opponents play. Once we get past the fundamentals, pretty much everything involves adjusting to opponents. If you can adjust well, you can play anything. You can take many of the strategies right to the top (and some of you will).

There will be over 100 example hands. Wherever possible, this book is example-driven.

This book is being professionally edited by Tommy Angelo's editor, Anna Paradox. Anna kicks butt.

Truth be told, after reading a draft for one of the big Core sections, my no-limit mentor refused to help other than spotting clear errors because he does not want some of the ideas published.

is there any way to convince you to 'lose' the manuscript?

I don't want to see my no-limit ponds become like the limit ponds. I'm selfish like that.

You're forgetting something. Limit hold'em is a much more mechanical game - for example, SSHE is basically example hands with explanations on how to correctly play the hand and why. NL is so much more read and feel dependant + it is much more suited to a gambler's needs than limit. Most of the gambling population (donks) are unable to even apply the straightforward advice and rather easy to apply concepts taught in SSHE, so as for learning to apply NL concepts I think they're pretty close to hopeless. Also, their gambling tendencies and proneness to tilt and costly mistakes is much greater in LHE than NL.

I look forward to the book.

By Online specific I mean that there are alot of moves i'd make live that I would never make online and vice versa.

Online is like limit in the way that it is a lot more mechanical than live, i'd find it very hard live to c-bet as much as I do online, obv my dressing gown pant combo gives me the confidence to hit return :P

Re: Update on SSNL

Matt, thanks for the update.

My curiosity centers around whether this book will cover an area that NLHET&P started... even mentioned that they (the authors) were considering the section as an introductory.

Manipulating Your Opponents pg 231 ... " This section is by no means a complete exposure to the topic. Indeed one could easily write ten times this amount on the topic and still not cover every technique....."

We're going to discuss those kinds of online vs live play issues in a chapter in volume 2. It's about half written if memory serves.

Matt,

There's a pretty good chance you know all this, but nevertheless, regarding the hyphenation of no limit:

You should only hyphenate it when it when it's being used as a phrasal adjective. So, for example, "no-limit texas hold 'em", but "there is no limit to how much money I can make pwning noobs on the interweb."

I hate when people screw stuff like this up, but I'm a giant grammar nit, so what can you do.

A mentor (in business not poker) told me many years ago to never stop seeking knowledge. If you continue to learn than anyone who is presently below you in terms of knowledge/ability will never catch up with or surpass you. You can also help out those less experienced without fear of having one of them take your spot in the pecking order. I think this bit of wisdom can be applied here as well.

Matt --- All apologies for the slight hijack.

Make no mistake. We understand grammar. But consider:

A floorman says, "There is no limit here." Does that mean there aren't any limit games? Or that a "no limit" game is going?

Language evolves. We're making deliberate choices to push it along. We will also write "checkraise" and "all in" (for all forms).

Curious, do you have winning small stakes online players proofreading your book/giving their views on some of the ideas in there for online play at certain levels?
