How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

I am in a little bit of shock right now at this...

[ QUOTE ]
China is cracking down on leg-lengthening surgery. The operation "involves breaking the patients' legs and stretching them on a rack." Recovery takes two years. The surgery was originally designed to repair accident damage or remedy dwarfism, but it "has become popular among young professionals desperate to climb up the ladder in [China's] height-conscious society." Purveyors advertise "height surgery with no pain," but the operation disfigured at least 10 patients at one hospital last year. Government's plea: "Leg-lengthening surgery is a clinical orthopedic treatment, not cosmetic surgery," and it may be done only "for strict medical reasons."

I think that I am content at 6'1. I couldn't fathom going through this process and it taking two years to fully heal.

I'm far too active to give up all of my regular activity for 2 years to gain a couple of inches.

I don't think anyone 6' or above is allowed to answer this question. Evan?

5'10" is fine. Another inch or two would be nice, but the amount of time, money or effort I'd put into achieving this is close to zero.

Yeah I'm 6' but I pity short guys so I can understand it. How tall is a tall guy in china, 5'8''?

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

I am 6'5" so no need here. I wouldn't want to be shorter, but also no way any taller. Beds, backseats of cars, and airplanes are already tough enough as it is.

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

I'm 6'3 and am very happy with my height. Adding 3 inches wouldn't help me any and I would be in the position of being awkwardly tall without being able to play in the NBA.

If I was gonna get any height it would neet to at least a foot to 18 inches.

So, yes I would love to be 7'6" to make an NBA run, but other than that, I'm fine with my height.

Talls guys can get short, medium, and tall girls with ease.

Short guys can only get short girls.

Plus, I love having my girlfriend be over a foot shorter than me. I can't imagine what its like for Tom Cruise-like guys with girls bigger than them.

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

Also, please download Randy Newman's "Short People". I play this for my short friends.

Lyrics:

Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
To live

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
`Round here

Short People are just the same
As you and I
(A Fool Such As I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's A Wonderful World)

Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
To love

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
'Round here

I'm pretty happy with 5'9". I think being taller would get in the way of things I like to do like running and climbing.

I'm just 5'7" so I would love to be a lot taller. I love playing basketball & had issues doing it at the high school level based on my height.

I agree with what Noah said about the short girl thing. As well, girl love taller guys in general. It's not a big thing for me right now because I have a gf, but definately a problem.

Finally, someone who has some interest

I just was so shocked reading this. I figured I'd share with you gents and see what everyone else was thinkig.

I'm 5'11" but I don't think that really matters. I don't think even if you were short you would consider this operation. Two years is a lot of time to lose activity. Not too mention how everyone would make fun of you. Maybe in that culture it is acceptable to a degree...but I can't imagine America getting behind this operation.

Haven't they ever heard of human growth hormone?

I'm 6'1", pretty happy with my height, but I'd pay a good deal of money to be 3 or 4 inches taller for basketball purposes.

Wow, I had no idea people really cared that much about being taller. 2 years of your life to recover is a long time.

Do you shorter guys actualy get shut down by chicks for being short alone?

I'm about 5'7". It'd be better for sports, but aside from that, no way. The only chicks who wouldn't date me because of my height are taller than me anyway. I've never had issues in that department.

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

I already have long legs and a short torso (6'), so making legs longer would just be ridiculous.

I'm assuming they stretch the femurs out? People are going to start looking funny with short little (fibula? tibia?...whatever the bone from the knee to ankle is called), and long femurs.

People who are like 5'7 with short legs and long torso are probably the best candidates. They could get to a more respectable height of 5'9", AND look proportional.

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

I'm short, 5'1", and I'd love to be a few inches taller. I can't say, with any certainty, that it has affected my dating results, but I've definitely read and heard that women prefer taller men.

The most recent thing I remember hearing was that 20/20 or 60 Minutes did some sort of sexual myths testing thing a year or two ago, and one of the things tested was the height of potential partners. The results, when women were presented with a line up of guys, were that, of the women interviewed, none of them chose the shortest guy, regardless of what they were told about his other qualities, like wealth, business success, etc.

Anyway, as much as I'd like to be taller, I would not want to undergo this kind of procedure to get that height.

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

6'8" here. I don't mind my height right now, and I feel the benefits outweigh the inconveniences, perhaps being a few inches shorter would be more practical in terms of finding clothes etc.

That being said, I would really have preferred to be about 3 inches taller, at which point I feel I could have made a better true center, as opposed to a tall and slow forward.

I can definately tell that girls look at me less because I'm short. It's more obvious at a school like UF because there are a bunch of self-centered dumb bitches but I've seen plenty of girls go for "ugly" taller guys because they would rather be seen with a taller guy.

It's not the end of the world though becaue if my height bothered a potential gf, date, hookup, etc, I wouldn't want to be with her anyway.

it's not that you can't do these things if you're tall, it's just that you're at a disadvantage. you gotta want it!

Re: How much do you want to be a few inches taller...

This is something that some of the shorter people might find very interesting. I don't remember where this came from but it was a study about how height will affect a man's results in his career and with women. Height does affect how much money you make and how many women you have sex with, that was shown without a doubt in the study. But the really interesting thing is that it wasn't adult height that mattered it was your height during high school. If you were short in high school and then got a growth spurt in college then you would tend to have 'short man' results in work and dating. If you were maybe 5' 10" in high school but then stopped growing you would be closer to 'tall man' results. And the conclusion was that it has everything to do with self confidence, if you are tall in high school you develop confidence that stays with you for life, if you were short you have a lack of self confidence that stays with you.
