have you seen villain do this before? in my experience, an out-of-nowhere bet like this once you've shown this much strength is fairly often the nuts or close to it.

i think you have to call this, though since only like four hands beat you. he'll have 99 or QQ here sometimes, but he'll also have 64 and 33 here a lot as well.

call, turn bet is fine.

I would be tempted to raise here against the villain because, judging from your description, he may call with a lot of hands you beat. Turn bet is ok, but I would want to bet closer to the pot considering the board's texture.

i am really confused why your not trying to get all your money in here. what beats you? 5 7? 5 2?

Why call? I am pushing this river all day, based on how you described Villain, and the fact that the board is as dry as can be.

57 and 52 are a possibility, though I think he would have led out for more than a minbet on the flop and almost certainly would have c-r the turn with a made straight. 96 or 99 seemed most likely to me given the action.

The question in my mind was whether it was 96+bluff often enough to be worth a call.

The idea of a raise never entered my mind.

Its call or push. 80/4s sometimes have insane river aggression and semi normal flop aggression. Usually passive on the turn.

Re: Set of 4s against river aggression

I think it is pretty obvious here, that the turn and river cards don't help the Villain vs your set. Anything that beats you beat you on the flop.*

If someone flops a straight on a 643 board vs my middle set, I am going to get stacked 95% of the time. Not getting stacked in these situations usually means you are not getting enough value out of your sets.

*With the exception of 99 and QQ, both of which are extremely unlikely holdings given the action.
