The Charity Shield (Man U vs. Chelsea) this weekend marks the close of the pre-season and the start of the new season. Any predictions? A Man U repeat? A return of Chelsea to the top? Does any other team have a shot at winning the league?

FU Gus, I was about to make this thread!!!1

I think ManU repeats, however I think all of the top 4 have the quality to compete this year, unlike last year. The cup competitions should be better. I am thinking my Arsenal are getting a trophy this year.

My prediction for the top 4.
1.ManU
2. Chelsea
3. Arsenal
4. Pool

My reasons: ManU added some depth to their squad, although this striker situation currently looks shakey. They have to fix that in order to repeat, however they have a great midfield and could get by with that and with a weaker strike force. Injuries should be a major concern for them IMO.

Chelsea, I think the ANC will screw them big time. 4 Players, two of which are starters are gone for at least a month. They do have some quality backups though. Wouldn't surprise me to see them win CL this year.

Arsenal, still concerns over depth, however from what I have seen from the pre-season, several of their young guys look improved. The team looks fresher, happier, and more organized without Henry. As long as Eduardo gets his papers, I am not too concerned. We are losing Eboue and Toure to ANC. I have heard Adebayor is no longer playing for Togo, which is nice I can see us nagging a cup. FA would be nice.

Liverpool added some good players, but man, they shipped out a lot as well. It could take them several months to get use to playing with each other. Of course, they will probably do well in CL.

Other predictions, I think Birmingham and Sunderland are staying up. Derby, Wigan, and Boro(!) to drop.

Re: **** OFFICIAL Premiership 2007-08 season Thread!*****

just to add: Teams getting into Europe (other than the top 4)

-Spurs
-Newcastle
-Man City

Also to add:
Ivory Coast better win the ANC. Drogba, Kalou, Toure(s), Eboue, and Zokora. Wow.

You have your opinion, I have mine.

Arse has done nothing but go backward all offseason. Spuds have seemed to add to the strength they had during the second half of last year. After finishing 5th the past 2 seasons, I think this is the year they break through.

Jose is under pressure to produce more attractive football. I am hoping we can keep the relentless pressure grind that was our trade mark last season with mucho added attacking bite.

This will deliver the holy quad.

Also Pool will finish above the arse.

Bottom line for Spurs fans, the team Arsenal have this year is better than the team they had last year that comfortably finished 4th and only missed 3rd because of GD. Plus our team only gets better because we should have Diarra soon and hopefully Kanoute!

Gareth Bale is more then just some championship player as you put it. This is a guy that spurs nabbed right from under ManU, and honestly, he would've been penciled in to start for us by mid season. He is probably the best defender under the age of 25 right now in england, and he can strike a nasty free kick

Alex is an absolute beast. So happy PSV lost him.

Chelsea and Man Utd are landslides ahead of everyone else. I can see Liverpool finishing third this year though. Spurs over Arsenal, maybe... because Jol is awesome.

Too bad I'll be missing sunday's game between Feyenoord and Liverpool but than again friendlies don't mean squat anyway.

Yep. But last year, Chelsea lost both of them and ended up with a MF playing CB. This year, they have two quality CBs on the bench. Plus, I think both can fill in at the LB or RB positions. (Ben Haim was playing LB in one of the preseason games).

This season should be a vintage.

There are at least 2 1/2(pool) teams that are real contenders. Spurs has spent 40 million, other teams have spent liberally also and there is an outside chance of the Arse being relegated.

There's no way that Manchester City will get a Euro spot this upcoming season. Does the future look bright? Definitely.
Portsmouth wasn't able to win away from Fratton Park last year but they were still the most improved team. They were only two points away from a Euro spot after avoiding relegation the year before. The only negative is probably how they'll start out since they begin the year against Manchester United and Bolton at home.

Bolton has the talent to finish 7th again this year but they have a lackluster manager (Sammy Lee) since Sam Allardyce is gone. Aston Villa will be better on attack since Juan Pablo Angel will be in the MLS (4 goals in 23 appreances for Villa). If Thomas Sorensen isn't in the line-up for the start of the season (injured last week vs Toronto FC) than you can swap Villa with Everton or Bolton. However, Martin O'Neil is one of the best things going on right now in the EPL.

Yea but what is lackluster about big Sam?

What he did at Bolton is incredible. They were a nothing team with no pedigree in the EPL and he turned them into a significant Premier League force who all team hate to play away.
