Can settings be changed so that when I get an email telling me I have a PM it actually contains the text of the PM? I think this makes so much sense that I can't believe it's not already standard.

I hope the reason it's not being done isn't anything related to advertising pageviews.

Nope. The software doesn't provide that option.
